A Notebook for Viola Players, by Ivo-Jan van der Werf

The number of ways to play the viola is determined by the number of violists in the world. Each player has (and should have) a unique technique, a unique sound and a unique way of interpreting music. Why should this be? Because each player is physically, emotionally and mentally an individual. It would be so boring if every violist sounded the same. A unique voice is much more interesting and compelling. To this end we have to determine our approach to playing on every level. But, the basics of what we do are going to be very similar. The individuality comes later, when we can develop our techniques to express ourselves as unique voices. The basics are determined by the fact that the majority of us are born with two arms, two hands, two thumbs, eight fingers, two legs etc. The way we all walk is similar due to this, though everyone has an individual and often recognizable walk. The physical movement involved in walking is based on common principles for almost everyone. So it should be in the way we set up the viola and our approach to it.
The position of the body, the way we stand or sit, the way we raise our arms to hold the viola and bow, the actual bow hold and the shape of the left hand, all these basic things can be approached from common physical principles, even though every player is built differently. The wonderful thing about violists is not just the physical diversity of the people playing the viola, but also the diversity in the shape and size of violas themselves. It can lead to challenging issues and resolutions to problems. Again, coming from common principles can help in deciding on all the variations of approach we have.
The one thing that every single violist can hopefully agree on is that we want to create the best sound possible. Why after all were we drawn to play this amazing instrument? Everything I suggest in the text and practiced in the exercises is to this one, basic, unifying principle. Sound is affected not just by the way we put the bow on the string but by the way we hold the viola, the way the fingers of the left hand approach the fingerboard, the quality of the vibrato, the way we stand and breathe, by intonation. The list goes on and on.
Hopefully by reading through the text and playing the exercises in the ways suggested, you will gain a good understanding of how to create a great sound, how to allow the viola to resonate without forcing it, how to gain dexterity in both the bow and the left hand and how to play in a relaxed yet vital manner.
Ultimately, everything I suggest to think about in playing the viola should become natural and habitual. For those more advanced players trying this out for the first time, one of the toughest things is to overcome old, ingrained habits. Always remember the goal, don t get discouraged and don t rush. New habits take time to get bedded in. The goal is definitely worth the physical and mental effort.

Concise, thorough, and highly effective!
By Amazon Customer
I am a viola instructor at two colleges here in Southern California. I picked up a copy of Notebook for Viola Players last month, and initially found two or three exercises that were very useful, put it aside for a bit, then started practicing some of the other exercises in the book that I hadn't paid much attention to.

As I spent more and more time with the book I came to admire the simple brilliance of these exercises, and am awed at how many important fundamentals of viola playing the book addresses in such a slim volume. I own a number of books on string technique, but I haven't yet come across one that covered so much material so concisely and effectively.

One of my mentors liked to say that every teacher has a piece of the puzzle. This book has provided me with a number of small, but very important, pieces that were hampering my own playing. I have already begun teaching these exercises to my own students and have encouraged them to purchase their own copies.

This book is amazing!!!

This is the second edition of this book: http://smile.amazon.com/Notebook-Viola-Players-Ivo-Jan-Werff/dp/1931823979/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1419647439&sr=8-2&keywords=viola+notebook

This book shows you how to develop your viola technique. Basically all kinds of left and right hand technique problems are expalined in words first, and then given a proper excercise. Playing most excersices can be tedious on their own but then playing real music becomes so much more enjoyable and easy. Personally, if I do not practice the excersices for sound, spicatto, some left hand extentions and some double stops every day my overall viola technique would deteriorate pretty fast. Practicing from this book is like practicing scales but it addresses every technical problem and it is much more diverse. I personally warm up about 30 minutes with it daily and change most of the excersices I practice, every single day. Thus, I keep up my overall technique at a pretty good level. The book comes with a DVD where Mr. Werff shows how all the excersices should be practiced.

The Contetnts are as follow:

Introduction
Posture
Bowing: that includes
preliminary bow excersices
basic bowing excersices
bow control

Left Hand:
vibrato
preliminary left hand excesrsices
shifting
left hand stamina
extensions and flexibility
double stops

At the back the book has reccomendations from some pretty famous violists like Simon Rowand-Jones, James Dunham, Roger Tapping and Edward Vanderspar.

Finding Words to Describe the "Wholly Other"
By miles@riverside
This book attempts to describe profound religious experience that occurs at the visceral, non-rational level. In doing so, the author coins some latin phrases that have since become embedded in the literature on religion: (1) the NUMINOUS, which is the extra meaning of "the Holy" beyond simple "goodness"; and also (2) the MYSTERIUM TREMENDUM, the nature of the numinous, which connotes "awefulness" (the terror of God or the Other World, which Otto argues is the starting point for the historical development of religion), "overpoweringness" (in which we feel dwarfed into insignificance), "energy" (religious fervor), the "wholly other" (that which is outside the realm of our senses or common experience), and "fascination" (wonderfulness or grace).
This brief summary doesn't really do justice to Otto's description. Reading the first 70 or so pages of the text, you begin to get his emotional-level understanding of the horrifying, alien, shocks-you-out-of-this-world, yet somehow compelling nature of direct confrontation with the transcendent.
He stretches to describe some of the concepts. On the element of "awefulness", for example, he runs through this series of similar concepts: tremor -> fear -> hallow -> fear of god -> august -> grue -> grisly -> dread -> awe - > daemonic dread -> something uncanny -> eerie -> weird.
Otto relies on a concept he derives from Kant called "schematization". He uses it to associate rational ideas with non-rational ideas. For example, physical sex schematizes "love"; written or recorded songs schematize "musical feeling"; the sublime feeling we get from written text or works of art schematizes "the Holy". It's important not to confuse the schematization with the thing itself: so the "morally good" schematizes "the Holy", but the "morally good" is not the Holy.
I thought the text bogged down quite a bit after the first 100 pages or so. He spends three whole chapters arguing with Schleiermacher's concept of "Divination", for example (it's a type of recognition or gnosis of the Holy). But the first half is definitely worth reading, though a bit difficult.

A Revelation...
By E Eakins
Living as we do in an age where religion in general (and Christianity specifically) has been largely co-opted by those who consider it to be "morality touched with emotion", "The Idea of the Holy" offers a alternative view towards religion and spirituality. Otto introduces a way of approaching the subject that avoids the twin traps of emotion and intellect, allowing us to understand "religious feeling" as a phenomenon all it's own, as a "sense' with its own attributes.
For those who can (through scholarship or patience) penetrate the sometimes dense and dated prose, this book has the potential to remove the debris of thousands of years of so-called theology and philosophy and to find the experience of God without intermediaries. It is indeed, a revelation.

Knocked Off Your Horse
By G. Bestick
This book, first published in 1917, is rightly regarded as a classic of religious philosophy.

Otto's great contribution to Christianity was to assert the importance of a non-rational approach to the divine. Christianity, which is the most dogmatic and moralistic of the major world religions, needed the corrective. Otto created the word "numinous" to stand for the sense of a divine presence that operates beyond rational understanding. He also coined the term "mysterium tremendum" to connote the inchoate sense of awe and dread that humans feel in the presence of the divine. To him, both of these ideas were essential to a full expression of the religious spirit.

One reaction to this book over the years goes something like this: either you've been knocked off your horse like St Paul, in which case you already have a direct experience of the numinous, or you haven't. Why bother to analyze something that by its very nature can't be put into words? Here Otto makes a subtle but crucial distinction. He's not talking about a numinous feeling, but about a feeling of the numinous. In other words, the numinous exists out there, not inside us, so we can approach it as an object to be observed and, at least by analogy to the sensations it excites with us, described.

Otto didn't reject the rational, though. Without rationality, he says, we can't have belief, only feelings. In his view of religion, the rational and non-rational interpenetrate each other like the warp and woof of a fabric, which can't be separated without destroying the very garment it makes. He points out several times that fully understanding the non-rational conception of god deepens our rational religious ideas.

Otto was a Christian, and believed deeply in the superiority of Christianity as the highest synthesis of the rational and moral with a primal sense of awe. (Buddhists might differ.) Fortunately for his reputation as a religious philosopher he was much more than a Christian apologist: he was a close observer of human behavior and of religious practices around the world. If Otto had been born seventy five years later, he might have been Joseph Campbell. He traveled widely, and had a deep knowledge and appreciation of Asian, Arabic and Greek religious thought. He anticipated Campbell by demonstrating that a sense of spiritual awe and mystery is universal to all religions.

In his observations of how mankind divines the presence of the holy, Otto realized the importance of predispositions - a person must be both receptive to divine presence and capable of recognizing when it appears. In this he anticipates neural Darwinism, which also talks about our predisposition toward certain aspects of reality. For instance, we have evolved an ability to recognize sound patterns. This isn't music, but it allows us to hear a song and store it as such in our brain. Similarly, we are capable of conceiving of an overarching force that exists beyond our selves, and are capable of recognizing manifestations of it. This isn't religion, but it's the precursor to any truly religious feeling.

This book strikes sparks in almost every chapter, even the ones settling obscure doctrinal scores. It deserves the high regard in which it's held because Rudolf Otto is a remarkably good guide to the ineffable.

What To Do When Things Go Wrong
From Making Things Happen, Chapter 11

1. Calm down. Nothing makes a situation worse than basing your actions on fear, anger, or frustration. If something bad happens to you, you will have these emotions whether you’re aware of them or not. They will also influence your thinking and behavior whether you’re aware of it or not. (Rule of thumb: the less aware you are of your feelings, the more vulnerable you are to them influencing you.) Don’t flinch or overreact—be patient, keep breathing, and pay attention.

2. Evaluate the problem in relation to the project. Just because someone else thinks the sky has fallen doesn’t mean that it has. Is this really a problem at all? Whose problem is it? How much of the project (or its goals) is at risk or may need to change because of this situation: 5%? 20%? 90%? Put things in perspective. Will anyone die because of this mistake (you’re not a brain surgeon, are you?)? Will any cities be leveled? Plagues delivered on the innocent? Help everyone frame the problem to the right emotional and intellectual scale. Ask tons of questions and get people thinking rather than reacting. Work to eliminate assumptions. Make sure you have a tangible understanding of the problem and its true impact. Then, prioritize: emergency (now!), big concern (today), minor concern (this or next week), bogus (never). Know how long your fuse is to respond and prioritize this new issue against all existing work. If it’s a bogus issue, make sure whoever cried wolf learns some new questions to ask before raising the red flag again.

3. Calm down again. Now that you know something about the problem, you might really get upset (“How could those idiots let happen!?”). Find a way to express emotions safely: scream at the sky, workout at the gym, or talk to a friend. But do express them. Know what works for you, and use it. Then return to the problem. Not only do you need to be calm to make good decisions, but you need your team to be calm. Pay attention to who is upset and help them calm down. Humor, candor, food, and drink are good places to start. Being calm and collected yourself goes a long way toward calming others. And taking responsibility for the situation (see the later section “Take responsibility”), regardless of whose fault it was, accelerates a team’s recovery from a problem.

4. Get the right people in the room Any major problem won’t impact you alone. Identify who else is most responsible, knowledgeable, and useful and get them in together straight away. Pull them out of other meetings and tasks: if it’s urgent, act with urgency, and interrupt anything that stands in your way. Sit them down, close the door, and run through what you learned in step 2. Keep this group small; the more complex the issue, the smaller the group should be. Also, consider that (often) you might not be part of this group: get the people in the room, communicate the problem, and then delegate. Offer your support, but get out of their way (seriously—leave the room if you’re not needed). Clearly identify who is in charge for driving this issue to resolution, whether it’s you or someone else.

5. Explore alternatives. After answering any questions and clarifying the situation, figure out what your options are. Sometimes this might take some research: delegate it out. Make sure it’s flagged as urgent if necessary; don’t ever assume people understand how urgent something is. Be as specific as possible in your expectation for when answers are needed.

6. Make the simplest plan. Weigh the options, pick the best choice, and make a simple plan. The best available choice is the best available choice, no matter how much it sucks (a crisis is not the time for idealism). The more urgent the issue, the simpler your plan. The bigger the hole you’re in, the more direct your path out of it should be. Break the plan into simple steps to make sure no one gets confused. Identify two lists of people: those whose approval you need for the plan, and those who need to be informed of the plan before it is executed. Go to the first group, present the plan, consider their feedback, and get their support. Then communicate that information to the second group.

7. Execute. Make it happen. Ensure whoever is doing the work was involved in the process and has an intimate understanding of why he’s doing it. There is no room for assumption or ambiguity. Have specific checkpoints (hourly, daily, weekly) to make sure the plan has the desired effect and to force you and others in power to consider any additional effort that needs to be spent on this issue. If new problems do arise, start over at step 1.

8. Debrief. After the fire is out, get the right people in the room and generate a list of lessons learned. (This group may be different from the right people in step 4 because you want to include people impacted by, but not involved in, the decision process.) Ask the question: “What can we do next time to avoid this?” The bigger the issue, the more answers you’ll have to this question. Prioritize the list. Consider who should be responsible for making sure each of the first few items happens.

The Best Review Ever...
By Terry MacDonald
There is a lot of praise out there for Scott Berkun and this book in particular. I feel a bit silly adding to the list of reviews, but I decided to go forward anyway when I tasked myself with writing the best review ever. I think a lot of us are looking to figure out what is the best in a fast fashion. Word of mouth is always king, so Amazon reviews come as close as they can. So, why read Making Things Happen?

- Note that it is the new edition of The Art of Project Management.
- You will gain personal motivation to make things happen either at work or in life.
- The book covers how to be a great project manager, from gathering ideas to managing teams and schedules.
- It may not be all new news, but it's all the best management practices in one well-designed book.
- He introduces several key concepts and brings perspective to areas that may seem like common sense, but as the wise saying goes: "We need not be so much instructed but reminded."
- This book is more than just an overview, but you do need to continue to learn. For more in-depth looks into project management, one can read up on the Agile Manifesto, Lean Kanban principles; SEI's CRM for risk management; and The Practice of Creativity: A Manual for Dynamic Group Problem-Solving
- Scott Berkun's style of writing is really wonderful. His voice is both practical and vivid, engaging and clear. His level of expertise in communicating what it means to be a great project manager has transcended from author to teacher, which means you know he's good!

I hope you find this review helpful. Now, go make things happen!

On time as promised. Excellent Amazon seller. Does not discuss how to make the 1,000,000 matches in a barrel thing, just something about management stuff.

Unfortunately, few traders achieve this goal. Review
"At last - a money management book that is not intimidating or boring. Ryan Jones has made a complex subject easier to understand and follow. I am especially excited for all independent traders" -- Glen Ring, President, Glen Ring Enterprises editor of View on Futures newsletter

"Money management is the most overlooked part of trading, but is the key to building enormous wealth. Ryan Jones first overviews classical methods and then discusses a new paradigm which, combined with a reliable trading method, can lead to financial security." -- Murray Ruggiero, President, Ruggiero & Associates contributing editor, Futures magazine

From the Inside Flap
"If traders plan on making serious money in [the] markets, it will boil down to one thing: how they manage their money. Outside of sheer luck, no one will make a tremendous amount of money.without a proper money management strategy. This is the basis of this book." -from the Preface Not a week goes by that investment experts don't offer us more "winning" trading methods and systems. Some work better than others, but they all seem to stop working sooner or later. To obtain-and maintain-an edge on a regular basis, savvy traders need an effective money/risk management plan. Based on sound trading principles, The Trading Game gives investors proven risk management techniques that are not only easy to understand and apply, but can lead to consistent and regular profits. Written by Ryan Jones, whose seminars on risk management are eagerly attended by traders nationally, this groundbreaking book shows you step-by-step how to increase your trading profits without necessarily increasing the performance of your trading system or method. By using the management techniques described, you can reap greater profits whether the method wins 25 percent of the time, 40 percent of the time, or 90 percent of the time. Unlike other books on risk management that tend to be loaded down with complicated formulas and technical jargon, The Trading Game presents the topic in a way that is clear, concise, and practical. Covering the why's, what's, when's, and how's, it walks you through the entire risk management process with complete details on everything from margin requirements and fixed fractional trading to market weighting and protecting profits. Along with a complete, workable method for making $1 million in five years or less, you'll find straightforward guidelines on determining how many trades to place, analyzing what their maximum drawdowns should be, and combining different markets and different systems for diversification. You'll also learn to assess whether you're a conservative or aggressive trader, what your goals are, and the degree to which you're able to tolerate risk. An invaluable guide for every trader and sophisticated investor, The Trading Game offers a powerful array of solutions to one of the most puzzling problems in trading: how to keep losses small so that profits accrue.

Great explanation of Probability Theory
By Daniel Arabian
Probabilities and statistical chances are great and I use them in my line of work, but when money is on the line I want more then the theory and probabilities of chance making my decisions. . . . This book is better off in the classroom or for someone who enjoys theory and the intellectual challenge of proving the theory correct.

Finally a system for the little guy!!
By Charles T. Dowis
I read this book with mixed feelings. First, after looking at some of the reviews, I wondered if we were reading the same book. Now I know why -- the writing is terrible. Some sections I had to read 3 or 4 times before I even began to understood what he was talking abou. It does not surprise me that several reviewers obviously were clueless on what he was talking about. This book desperately needs a re-work.
My second reaction was "Finally a system for the small accounts". Most of the money systems I've seen are designed for major accounts (e.g. "don't risk more than 2% on a trade" -- yeah, right!) The trader with $10,000 or less should find a very workable system to manage his account. His system handles important issues of how to build equity on the way up, and another section on handling downturns, including streaks. He gives a good discussion on other money management techniques as well.
Wow!
It will take several.... several readings for it to make sense, but, believe me, it is well worth the effort. Hopefully we can look forward to a second edition that makes sense.

Read Ralph Vince or Fred Gehm's books instead. Both are more informative for the money.
