In this book Daniel Franklin enters the scholarly controversy about the sources of American film content. His conclusion, vigorously argued, is that film-makers are simply acting as good capitalists and responding to the audience. About the Author
Daniel P. Franklin is associate professor of political science at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the author of Making Ends Meet: Congressional Budgeting in the Age of Deficits and Extraordinary Measures: The Exercise of Prerogative Powers in the United States and is coeditor of Political Culture and Constitutionalism: A Comparative Approach. He teaches courses on American government, politics of the presidency, and politics and film.

If you are looking for a textbook on this subject, look elsewhere

This textbook seems to be of lower quality than I had hoped it would be. One thing that bothers me about this text is its very biased delivery coupled with the author’s apparent attempt to write off his own personal bias as objectivity. I believe that the author and I would agree on most political issues that relate to ideological perspective, and I would even go so far as to admit that facts do tend to have a “liberal” bias. However, the author frames many of his discussions as scientific and objective early on in the text, only to accept his opinions as fact in the later chapters. He even goes so far as to refer to a film as “a piece of trash” (p. 121) without so much as an empirical statement backing up the claim. Yes, the film in question may be “trash”, but that is a subjective statement. He does a decent job, early in the text, of giving balance to his discussions by detailing potential arguments on a particular subject from both the Left and the Right. It would have been much more effective for him to clearly separate his empirical arguments from his subjective ones in later chapters. Haphazardly mixing the two together diminishes the truth-value of his scientific analyses and has the effect of rambling on.

My primary complaint about this text is probably more a fault of the editors. It is not very well organized. He laid out some pretty fundamental arguments in the early chapters of the book that are of course relevant to material discussed in later chapters. However, rather than a simple reminder of those fundamental arguments (e.g. the three eras of monopoly), he explains and re-explains this material far too often. I cannot help but ask myself: “Is he simply trying to fill up pages in his book, for the sake of filling up pages?” For example, pages 123-126 could have been entirely omitted—we have already read all of this in previous chapters, besides one or two new ideas. Why dedicate an entire section to the evolution of the economics of the film industry when this subject has already been exhausted in chapter 2? I understand the need to refer back to a previous argument in order to give credence to a new one, and that he is discussing a new subject in this chapter, but this is over the top. He only presents a couple of new arguments in this section of chapter 6—but they could have easily been included in chapter 2.

The blurred line between subjectivity and objectivity as well as the superfluous in-depth repetition of previously discussed topics may lead many intellectually curious readers to conclude that, without all of the added fluff, this textbook could have been just as effective had it been 30% shorter. Better yet, if Rowman and Littlefield had a page limit requirement for Franklin, he should have filled up that extra 30% with new material and new arguments that build on his old ones rather than parade the same material as entirely new arguments.

About the Author
Robert Beverly Hale was Curator Emeritus of the American Painting and Sculpture Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For forty years, he was instructor of artistic anatomy at the Art Students League. He also served as Adjunct Professor of Drawing at Columbia University and Professor of Art at Cooper Union. Hale was the author of Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters and co-author of Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters. Terence Coyle teaches figure painting and drawing at the Art Students League of New York and is the lecturer in Artistic Anatomy at the National Academy of Design School of Fine Arts in New York City. Coyle's paintings have been highly acclaimed and are in important collections throughout the country including the Museum of the City of New York; the New York State Museum in Albany; the Museum of Performing Arts, Billy Rose Theatre Collection; Fordham University; and, among other notables, in the collection of Ms. Helen Hayes. He co-authored with Robert Beverly Hale Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters and Albinus on Anatomy.

Companion to tape series by Robert B. Hale

I purchased the companion tape series from Jo-An Pictures Ltd in NYC (212-532-5003) several years ago. The book and tapes record the lectures given by Robert Beverly Hale at the Art Student's League in NYC. You may never find better instruction on artistic anatomy and drawing the human form! He was without doubt the greatest instructor of this subject! The tapes are almost like attending his classes! You must draw from life as well as study this material to master the subject. If you cannot afford the tapes, at least get this book! You will not find a better investment but you must also make the effort! A valid observation from his lectures: 'You can not draw a form, if you don't know it exists.' If you want to draw figures that will impress other artists, clients with medical training or other sophisticated viewers, then master the lessons in this book!

I believe Tony Ryder may have attended Robert Hale's lectures at the Art Student's League. Also get Tony Ryder's book entitled "The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing". It represents the other traditional approach to figure drawing. His explanation of light and shadow on the human form is the best I have ever seen. He emphasizes that it takes many hours to complete a finished drawing. Quick sketches are good for warming up but it's only one aspect of practice. Both books are well worth the investment!

A masterpiece of life drawing tuition

Mr Coyle has done great justice to his old mentor Robert Beverley HALE with this magnificent book. The lessons are based on Mr Hales teachings on the techniques and thinking of the great master drawers, and not only are the examples all master works, but innovative use of coloured line overlays makes sometimes difficult concepts abundantly clear. The real point of this book, as with all R.B.Hale books, is that YOU can learn to think in the same highly visually intelligent way as these greats of the past, and learn to apply that thinking to your own creations. BRAVO Messrs Hale et Coyle!

About the Author

Branislav M. Notaroš received the Dipl.Ing. (B.Sc.), M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in 1988, 1992, and 1995, respectively. From 1996 to 1998, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Belgrade, and before that, from 1989 to 1996, a Teaching and Research Assistant (faculty position) in the same department.� He spent the 1998-1999 academic year as a Research Associate at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He was an Assistant Professor, from 1999 to 2004, and Associate Professor (with Tenure), from 2004 to 2006, in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He is currently an Associate Professor (with Tenure) of electrical and computer engineering at Colorado State University.

Research activities of Prof. Notaroš are in applied computational electromagnetics, antennas, and microwaves. His research publications so far include 22 journal papers, 58 conference papers and abstracts, and a chapter in a monograph. His main contributions are in higher order computational electromagnetic techniques based on the method of moments, finite element method, physical optics, domain decomposition method, and hybrid methods as applied to modeling and design of antennas and microwave circuits and devices for wireless technology. He has produced several Ph.D. and M.S. graduates. Prof. Notaroš’ teaching activities are in theoretical, computational, and applied electromagnetics. He is the author of the Electromagnetics Concept Inventory (EMCI), an assessment tool for electromagnetic fields and waves. He has published 3 workbooks in electromagnetics and in fundamentals of electrical engineering (basic circuits and fields). He has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in electromagnetic theory, antennas and propagation, computational electromagnetics, fundamentals of electrical engineering, electromagnetic compatibility, and signal integrity. He has been consistently extremely highly rated by his students in all courses, and most notably in undergraduate electromagnetics courses (even though undergraduates generally find these mandatory courses quite difficult and challenging).

Dr. Notaroš was the recipient of the 2005 IEEE MTT-S Microwave Prize, Microwave Theory and Techniques Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (best-paper award for IEEE Transactions on MTT), 1999 IEE Marconi Premium, Institution of Electrical Engineers, London, UK (best-paper award for IEE Proceedings on Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation), 1999 URSI Young Scientist Award, International Union of Radio Science, Toronto, Canada, 2005 UMD Scholar of the Year Award, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 2004 Dean’s Recognition Award, College of Engineering, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 2009 and 2010 ECE Excellence in Teaching Awards (by nominations and votes of ECE students), Colorado State University, and 2010 George T. Abell Outstanding Teaching and Service Faculty Award, College of Engineering, Colorado State University.

Very Helpful for Principles of Electromagnetics

This is a very helpful book in learning applications of electromagnetics. If you do not have much coding experience, there are many helpful tutorials to teach you some coding basics. Along with tutorials, there are figures to show what the expected output should look like in order to check answers. I would highly recommend this book to help any student visualize fundamental principles of e-mag, while learning useful programming skills. Along with this book, I would recommend Dr. Notaros' "Electromagnetics" textbook. Several MATLAB examples refer to figures and problems from this book. I think that using both books gave the complete understanding of the subject material.

An Excellent Supplement to Undergraduate Courses in Electromagnetics

During my undergraduate career, I used this book in three different courses: A two-semester junior-level electromagnetics course sequence and a senior-level course on antenna theory. During these classes, I noticed that most electromagnetics textbooks involve a heavy dose of abstract concepts and formula derivations. As a result, many students are left without a very good intuitive grasp of the subject material.

This book is a supplement to any such standard electromagnetics textbook (Although it was explicitly intended to be a supplement to Electromagnetics by the same author, Branislav Notaros), containing many helpful exercises that provide a much deeper understanding than rote memorization of equations. It has several excellent exercises for plotting and visualizing fields, including some codes that involve producing vector fields, 3D plots, and animated graphics. Many of these plots are included in the book, so that students can check their work.

In addition to the helpfulness with visualizing concepts, this book is also a very good introduction to MATLAB programming in general. Many of the exercises are presented in a “Tutorial” format, walking the student through the coding procedure with a detailed explanation of each step of converting theory and equations into MATLAB syntax. This was especially helpful to me as I was able to apply those skills in other engineering classes.

I cannot recommend this book enough to both electromagnetics course instructors as well as to students who are looking to expand their conceptual understanding of electromagnetics.

Good book for learning how to make Electromagnetics useful

I used this book in conjunction Dr. Notaros's general Electromatics textbook for my undergrad emag class. While I don't think anyone would actually purport to enjoy emag exercises, I found these programming exercises to be a pleasant change from the paper and pencil kind. Through most of my undergrad, I always had trouble linking all the hand-written calculus and esoteric engineering functions to things I would do in a real job. Sure, in my internships I had seen plenty of mathmatical and engineering work in action, but it had all been done in code, and the 'calculus' and such was barely recognizable in the form of numerical methods. So doing the emag exercises in code after learning them in their traditional form helped me make that link of "oh, so that's how you actually use this stuff". That, and seeing variables that would take an hour to solve by hand suddenly solved in a millisecond is quite satisfying.

Overall, I think the book is a valuable resource and worth taking seriously, even if it's just to force you to learn a little programming. In the real world all of this kind of stuff ends up as code, and the quicker you learn to make the link between theory and code, the better off you're going to be.

Yosano Akiko (1878-942) is one of the most famous Japanese writers of the twentieth century. In her lifetime, Akiko published seventy-five books, among them twenty volumes of poetry, along with a definitive modern Japanese translation of the classic Tales of Genji.

"A pioneering feminist, pacifist, and social reformer, her passions were intensely reflected in her literary work, reviving tanka—a form similar to the sonnet—to renewed lyrical essence, creating a unique style of true emotional directness. Given the enormity if reverberative effects in Akiko's poems, Hamill and Matsui Gibson's translations are crisp and incisive, with judicious care given the limits of English syntax. So rarely do we Westerners hear women's poetry from Asia that books like this can be eye opening experiences.
Akiko was a famed poet in the early twentieth century and her poems still gleam and breathe after all these years.

Have always been a fan of her stuff, esp. the tanka. the translation by Sam Hamill & Keiko Matsui Gibson the best I've yet seen. Illustrations by Addiss a real plus.

A different view of Japanese poetry

This volume of poetry has the same high quality one has come to expect of Sam Hamill. It is enhanced by brush and ink illustrations by Stephen Addiss and a brief biographic introduction to the poem Yosano Akiko.
The most jarring poems are the twelve in modern style - jarring in the sense of being furthest from the reader's expectations. "Women Are Plunder" is a feminist poem opening with the image of a department store sale as a universal call to women. "The Town of Amazement" describes a Utopia - one without student plays - in which the power structure (political, educational, legal, religious. famial) is leveled. "Cold Supper" explores family financial troubles, a plight frequent in the poet's life. "You Shall Not Be Killed, Brother!" is a pacifist poem. Most of these modern poems are relatively time bound - interesting but ephemeral with some exceptions.
The poems written in the traditional tanka form, however, are more universal exploring sensuality, sexuality, religion ... An example: "On her cheek and mine, / although our minds so differ, / like utter strangers, / the pine winds blow equally - / almost as though we were friends." In these poems one sees a genius transforming traditional image and form into something new, expressing experience previously hidden and confronting the changing views of society.

Maria Manuela Cruz-Cunha is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Technology at the Polytechnic Institute of Cavado and Ave, Portugal. She holds a Dipl. Eng. in the field of Systems and Informatics Engineering, an M.Sci. in the field of Computer Integrated Manufacturing and a Dr.Sci in the field of Production Systems Engineering. She teaches subjects related with Information Systems, Information Technologies and Organizational Models to undergraduate and post-graduate studies. She supervises several PhD projects in the domain of Virtual Enterprises and Information Systems and Technologies. She regularly publishes in international peer-reviewed journals and participates on international scientific conferences. She serves as a member of Editorial Board and Associate Editor for several International Journals and for several Scientific Committees of International Conferences. She has authored and edited several books and her work appears in more than 100 papers published in journals, book chapters and conference proceedings. especially for genealogist like me. Unfortunately

The first few pages of the book cover a brief history of Monroe County. Within these pages are the names and years of service for sheriffs, various clerks, registers and trustees from about 1820 to 1884. Post offices and postmasters are similarly covered. This book does not provide an exhausted history of Monroe County, Tennessee.

Instead this publication gives biographical write-ups of specific individuals and some of their genealogy with sources where some of the information came from. It is an interesting read, especially for genealogist like me. Unfortunately, although my ancestors are from the East Tennessee area, I did not find any of them in this book.

Great for Taekwondo teachers

I'm a Taekwondo teacher. I'm not fluent in Korean, but I do like to use as much Korean terminology in the dojang as possible. This book has been a great resource for me to honor Taekwondo's Korean heritage and make our dojang a unique, Korean-language-based training hall. The book is separated into easy-to-use sections ("Small Talk", "Eating Out", "Sports Activities"), making it effortless to find what I need for the day's classes. I'm trying to introduce new phrases every day, and the children I teach are picking up more and more Korean easily. This book makes it so simple to do. I highly recommend it! Thanks, Tuttle!

Really enjoyed this book. They chose very commonly used, useful phrases that gives you the tools you need to navigate through the language. Perfect for anyone that is interested in learning Korean. Highly recommend.
