Another find and steamy read, Loved it! Just Loved Kaleb!

Kaleb, book 3, Samuel's Pride. Another find and steamy read, Loved it! Kaleb is just plain loveable! I loved him!. Kaleb gives off that older, wiser and you are safe with me vibe. Loved his back story with the Fae folk and witches. I loved his mate Thor, who is a childhood friend of Samuel, and was also abused by her father. They were each others rock and support and they could communicate telepathicly. Thor is a bit of a mystery and a little more than human. She served in the military, with the Secret Service and is currently working as a police detective.
Corrupt police oficeals, a mob boss with more money than sense, and an idiot family moemver are just a few of the things that the Pride takes on to help out their newest member. Some new characters are introduced. I really liked Ana, Philip and Hawk. Things just keep getting more intersting in the Pride.

Thor is one tough cookie and Kalab might have met his match

I am really enjoying the Samuel's Pride series. Each member is unique and adds some interesting drama to the storyline. Kaleb is a grizzly shifter, he is big, strong and can be scarey. Thor is a cop who is smart, tough and takes no prisoners. When she is hurt she calls out to the one person she always cared about to say goodbye, but Samuel is stubborn and wont let her give up. This was a great storyline, there is a lot of secrecy and shifty situations that are sure to keep you glued to your seat. Fast Paced , engaging , complicated, betrayal and humor make it so you can't help but fall in love with the characters. Thor is one tough cookie and Kalab might have met his match. I think as Samuel's pride grows the males are going to have to watch the females because if they ever ganged up on them they would be unstoppable. I like that there are so many old friendship in this series, the fact that the characters have history make for a more realistic situation and add some fun. Ms. Barton writes a mean story and as always captivates the reader from page one.

Execellent book

wow can I say super bear .. I loved Kaleb and Thor she is Samuel's childhood
friend .. She was working on an assignment and got caught by the bad people
who she was trying to catch but she didn't know she was setup by a person who you
never thought of .. Thor was hurt badly and Dying But Samuel and His pride had got to her before
she died ... Kaleb just found his mate , he didn't want a mate but hey sometimes you can't control
what faith brings you .. This amazing Third book in the series and each story gets better and better
this is a dark fantasy romance with bears wolfs and tigers and not forget Vampire all in one .. Hold on you are in for a adventure and sex maybe throw in some romance as well ...

Its Business Law

It is BLAW its not going to be fun or interesting no matter what. The reading is kind of scatter brained and isn't always easy to follow. Best way I learned to retain a chapter was go to the end look at the word glossary for the chapter and then go to the end of the book and read the definitions first then go back and skim through the chapter.

The two faces of Theresa

This was a disturbing book in many ways--not because of the subjectmatter or the storytelling, but because it reaches out to anyone who reads it, forcing them to confront their darker, hidden sides. As the story begins, Theresa Dunn is a 10-year-old child who comes from a large Irish Catholic family and frequently gets overlooked. The degree to which her parents pay her little attention while lavishing affection on her older sister, Katherine, is shocking, because Theresa's spine curvature could have been corrected immediately had they noticed. This, of course, adds to Theresa's self-loathing and her feeling that she is insignificant. The operation is a success, but Theresa is not quite the same. Katherine gets emotional and tells Theresa that she looked like she "came back from the dead". Theresa also has a slight limp to show for it, a constant reminder of her unimportance. From this point on, anyone who makes a reference to Theresa's limp, however casual, is basically striking Theresa in her most vulnerable place. Her failure to come to terms with her self-loathing eventually will lead to far more trouble in the future.
Theresa is still very much the good Catholic girl, however, and she still loves children. Her decision to become an elementary school teacher allows her to temporarily step into the role of "Mother" (nurturer) and "Father" (educator), to be simultaneously the parents she wished she had. It is during her college years that she meets Martin Engle, a sardonic English professor who will have a profound effect on her already shaky self-image. Martin is married, but he is still very much adored by his female students, and he does nothing to overtly discourage them. Theresa soon finds herself the object of Martin's affection, although he teases her for having such a "serious Catholic girl" personality. Rossner includes a number of vivid images in this section; for instance, Theresa, about to be seduced by Martin, watches coffee dripping from the coffee-maker, looking like brown mud. Their affair lasts for four years, until one day when Martin casually shrugs her off. She is simply another fling to him; he openly informs her that he will probably have another one by this summer. Theresa goes into a deep depression and again, comes out of it permanently altered. Now she is "soiled goods" in every sense of the word, and as her casual alter ego "Terry", she begins to behave recklessly, seducing strangers and bringing them to her apartment at night. During school hours with the children, however, she is still very much "Theresa", the "good" Catholic girl who lavishes affection on her students.
The "Mr. Goodbar" of the title is simply the name of one of Terry's haunts. Her double life is two such extreme opposites, that on the rare occasions when one element appears in another, it often leads to disaster. For instance, she meets a "nice" gentleman, James, who turns her off sexually, but who is comforting because of his unconditional love for her. This, of course, is beyond Theresa's comprehension, and in her perverse way, she often strives to push him away by acting "hard", swearing too much and being sardonic in much the same way as Martin. It is during one of these phases that Theresa attends a wedding in a "slutty" black dress that "Terry" would wear. At the sight of James' mother, Theresa is suddenly filled with shame, to the point where she feels physically ill. Likewise, with her "regulars", she is careful not to let them intrude into her "other life"; after sex, she immediately demands that they leave.
The most painful aspect of reading the book is the loneliness Theresa experiences. She has no close friends, her parents are remote and distant, and her older sister is flighty and cannot be depended on. Theresa's life is a dark abyss that she gradually sinks into, and she is a tortured, conflicted woman to the end. This can be a very depressing story, in spite of the vivid sexual imagery. Living in Theresa's skin is like going to a wild party every night, only to wake up with a horrendous hangover the next morning. The late 60's sensibilities are very much in evidence here, also; none of the so-called "peace and love" generation are any more successful at intimacy and committment than Theresa. James is a symbol of a more noble, idealistic time, when "old-fashioned" values like honesty and chivalry were treasured. Theresa herself is symbolic of people's best and worst selves; the tragedy is that the worst will often win out.

Still holds up thirty years later.

Judith Rossner, Looking for Mr. Goodbar (Washington Square Press, 1975)

Looking for Mr. Goodbar was an unconscionably shocking novel when it appeared in 1975. It was still shocking when Richard Brooks turned it into a devastating film featuring rising stars Richard Gere, Tom Berenger, and William Atherton as the three most important men in Diane Keaton's life. Now, here we are thirty years later. The scene Rossner set isn't shocking. But in some ways, her treatment of it is, and this is why Looking for Mr. Goodbar is still in print, three decades after its original release.

Theresa Dunn, we learn on the first page, is dead. She was killed by a guy she picked up in a bar a few hours beforehand (leading to Rex Reed's famous, and utterly inaccurate, statement "this is the story of what happens to Theresa in bars."). We go from police report to said guy's statement, which is equal parts amusing and chilling. Then the rest of the novel's three hundred ninety pages gives us Theresa's story as it leads up to her murder.

Despite Reed's tantalizing review, Theresa Dunn is not the kind of barhopper one might find in a bad seventies softcore movie. In fact, she spends not much time at all in bars themselves. (Mr. Goodbar, the name of the bar where she picks up the guy who kills her, is only mentioned by name twice in Theresa's portion of the story, if I recall correctly.) The novel actually focuses on Theresa's relationships, and how they contribute to the novel's outcome-- first with one of her college professors, and then conflicting, simultaneous relationships with two men, the macho and aggressive Tony and calm, staid James, as Theresa tries to figure out who she really is and what she wants from life.

Rossner approaches her subject matter in a frank, matter-of-fact tone. Thirty years on, it's not the sex that's shocking, nor the idea of having it casually; we've seen it all a thousand times before. It's small offhand comments about tangential topics, or terminology (none of which, of course, is capable of being used in an Amazon review), that are still a shock to the system. Reading it, you realize that not all of the boundaries we pushed in books in the seventies were eventually broken; some of them rebounded.

But all that aside, what's it like as a book? Well, it's readable, and a relatively quick novel; Rossner does know how to keep the pages turning. I'm not sure whether she had literary aspirations with this novel (and, to be honest, I'm not sure whether she achieved them, though being re-released by Washington Square Press in 1995 certainly lends the novel an air of credibility in that regard), but it's certainly two or three rungs above your garden-variety genre potboiler or Beeline novel. Rossner's characters are deep, rich constructions, even when they border on the stereotypical (Theresa's sister Katherine and her husband are clinging-to-the-sixties free love poster children, better for a laugh these days than anything else), and the situations in which they find themselves are grimly realistic. Rossner wrote herself a fine novel, and one that deserves to be rediscovered by a new generation. *** �

Caution on the road to love

Judith Rossner's warning in her novel to take a flashlight when we visit the darkest corners of sexual experimentation is forever relevant. "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" (the title not a character but a pick-up bar) gives us a Catholic teacher of deaf children who, after dark, takes on a truly dark character and sets out on the bar scene looking for sex and, maybe if she's lucky, love. But the search for both is strewn with broken hearts, disappointments and dangers, as Theresa finds out too late. Rossner's main character comes across as a basically desperate human scarred by years of indifferent parents, a sister who was preferred in childhood over her and a low self-image caused by a curved spine (although later corrected by surgery). In seeking approval, validation, redemption and love, Theresa ventures forth into the darkness and risks of anonymous sex and, of course, not finding in the darkness what she seeks. The accomplishment of "Goodbar" is Rossner's uncanny ability to focus on and then bare the desperation that fuels any person's search for love or whatever it's called. All too often, the searchers who wander too far into the blackness meet the same final fate that Theresa does, and Rossner's descriptive talents of that fate spare no one. Hers is a cautionary tale that, if we must, don't go too far into the night without a light on in the brain. Without it, we may never get a second chance. The book was later turned into a theatrical film with Diane Keaton turning in a tremendous performance. Both the film and book warrant attention and respect of the dangers of the night.

I'm just beginning to learn about Chakras, energy work, and crystals. This was a very straight-forward explanation with colorful pictures; easy to read; easy to use. It probably isn't the best for those who are very knowledgeable about the subject, but for beginners or as a quick reference guide, I would recommend it.

It has a wide variety of subjects such as crystal healing, different types of yoga, chakra balancing, reflexology, nutrition, spirituality, aromatherapy and many other topics. Enjoyable fairy tales

Good fairy tale collection! I love fairy tales retold, which was why I picked this book. It's one of my favorite genres and I am amassing quite a collection! This wasn't the very best but it was a good one and I enjoyed reading it. The author had her own original take on the tales, with both darker elements and some whimsy. I really liked reading them all together in one book rather than individually since they were connected in the universe created for the stories.

Great reference for practicing statisticians

I used this textbook for my introduction to statistic course in second year university, and I have since gone back to it numerous times. Its examples are well chosen and well written, and the mix of theory and application make it a great reference for teaching. My only problem with it is that it did not associate itself with a software package, which hurts its use in applied courses. I am forced to use a different Biostatistics textbook for my course (which includes SAS), but I develop my lecture material largely from this book.

As a beginner statistician, the layout of this book is very difficult to follow. It did not explain well the procedures or examples in the text. I do not recommend this book to a beginner, or to anyone not already experienced in statistics.

The Submarine equivalent to "Red Badge of Courage" or "All's

Quiet on the Western Front". A historical novel in the classic tradition of a great novel. A strongly anti-war novel functioning on many levels: anti-war, anti-authoritarian (against High Command in general and Hitler and Adm. Doenitz in paticular), instructional on the daily operation of a WWII U-boat in ALL activities, including huge hours fruitlessly patrolling (U-boats, unlike US Boats, didn't have radar until late in the war, nor specific " Ultra" code intercepts of enemy ship movements - though German codebreakers had some good successes until midway through the war); the obsolesence of the U-boats vs. experienced radar- equipped British destroyers and aircraft; the struggle of men in a tiny ship vs. the sea. This last topic receives much time, and the American translation of this originally German book is very detailed, raw, and poetic, particularly decribing the changing nature of the sea, the clouds, and the author's emotions as he tries to understand, often with great difficulty, exactly what is going on. you will find great controversy on this book, mostly centered on the drunkeness of shore leave, but also the anti- High Command sentiments that are probably exaggerated. I bought and read this book in 1976 when it came out in paperback and read it in the back seat of my dad's car on a cross-country family vaction roadtrip (I was 13) and I have read and enjoyed it several times since. A searing story of just incredible moments of combat and weeks of patrolling with no enemy contact -the norm for warships, and patrolling ships and aircraft, too - most convoys were never sighted, let alone attacked. The movie is very good, but this very good book beats it, as the really good books usually do. I tried the version from England (1974 hardcover) but found the tranlator's choice of words and phrasing to be very dry, uncolorful, and stiff- definetely get the American translation. Historically, the author crams 6 years of warfare into one superlong patrol, juxtapositioning some trends and common occurences a little too close together, but he does set his novel at what is now recognized as the turning point of the U-boat war- fall 1941. Although U-boats went on for another 15 months of havoc, especially of the Americas, Cape Town, and in the Indian Ocean, the British had in fact escaped serious war altering effects by the U-boats with the codebreaking, radar, signals location ("Huff Duff"), aircraft, and the Germans failure to build more boats earlier on, provide aircraft support, radar, and secure communications. The futility of the vastly outgunned, outnumbered and out-teched Germans has you rooting for them yet knowing that like in "Finding Private Ryan" or an old Western like "The Wild Bunch", these guys have all the odds against them.

Best book I've ever read

I have just been transported into a U Boat and have experienced war, claustrophobia, sex, fear, exhaltation, depression, sadness, joy, and bereavement -- all from this book. Buchheim's descriptions are total -- they grab you and PUT you into the places and the situations. I'm shocked at my reaction to this book. I think I'll read it a dozen more times in my life -- and I'm 72. This is not a recommendation to you to read this book: this is an ORDER to read it.

A look at WW II that will let you see German side of the war

I picked up a paperback copy of this book at the dump more than 15 years ago, the cover caught my eye so I picked it up. I read this book at least once a year, I find myself transported into U-96 departing La Rochelle. The writing is supurb, you feel as if you are there in the Control Room, as the depth charges are going off around you. Or the long hours spent at the mess table "Frigging Around" going back and forth in your little square on the map, while the Commmanders in Berlin play with you like Chess pieces. It is also interesting to note the "Old Man (probley no more than 26 years old) seems to despise sinking the ships, saying what a loss it is, yet he has his mission to perform. By the end of the book, I was rooting for the Germans all the way, hoping they will defeat the British. To me this is the mark of a great writer, to enable you to root for the "enemey" by the end of the book. If you can find it, read it!

Joe McGinniss started his career in journalism at the Worcester Telegram, Philadelphia Inquirer, and LA Herald-Examiner before becoming an overnight success with his first book, 'The Selling of the President,' which landed him on the NY Times bestseller list at age 26. He went on to write 10 more books, several of them bestsellers, and he currently is working on a book tentatively titled, 'Sarah Palin's Year of Living Dangerously,' to be published in 2011 by Broadway/Random House. He has five children and, at last count, seven grandchildren. McGinniss lives in Massachusetts with his wife, writer and editor Nancy Doherty.

INTELLIGENT AND ADDICTING

This magnificiently written "fly-on-the-wall" narrative about The Last Frontier is pretty dead-on and holds up after 20 odd years later. I have travelled many portions of the state on leisure expeditions and felt his emotions throughout each page. The most valuable asset of this book is its ability to both entertain the sourdough among us and in addition vividly depict the Alaskan aura for those who have never been. There are no slow moments: witty, poignant, and eloquent structure make this the most enjoyable book I have ever read - in actual fact, it is the Only book I have ever read whereas upon finishing the last page, I immediately began reading again! Favorite anecdote: In describing the residents of Alaska as thinking about Alaska all the time as if it was an entity onto itself in their lives, he states that this is a unique state of mind in that you would not, say, find people walking around Toledo contemplating the "Essence of Ohio".

.....postscript 14 years later.... Rest in peace Joe - you gave the world a masterpiece.

Alaska: the city guy's view

The "top note" of Joe McGinniss' story "Going to Extremes" is about what happens when a lot of folks from the lower 48 and a lot of money are thrown into Alaska at the same time--the late 1970s, when the pipeline was being built. McGinniss casts an urban reporter's jaundiced eye, for example, toward the drinking and drugs that seem like an inevitable consequence of people in the cold wilderness with nothing to do and some money.
Sometimes he intends to be virtually comic, as when a newbie pipefitter offloads his pickup truck from the ferry in a Panhandle town unconnected to the rest of the world by road, or when a drug-addled prostitute runs in to a travel agency in Valdez, Alaska, pointing a gun at the travel agent demanding an immediate trip out of town (to get away from creditors). The agent settles her down and puts her in his truck--as though this sort of thing happened everyday-- while he finishes out his conversation with McGinniss inside.
A long essay documenting McGinniss' trip to the far northern Brooks Range is dominated by his fear of bears (that's logical, I guess) and his city-slicker mountaineering inabilities, although it eventually rises to suggest the majesty of the land he was touring.
In contrast to John McPhee's "Coming into the Country," written in the same era, McGinniss seems determined to remain a sardonic outsider, an observer of people and their weaknesses primarily, rather than an observer of nature. It's an insightful approach although I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of real Alaskans objected to it, and certainly I am hoping to avoid the gun-toting ladies of the evening on my upcoming trip to tour the state.

I don't know anything about Alaska until I read this book. I have no idea whether it is accurate or not the way he described that remote area. But my heart was following him everywhere he went and every feeling he got. I chewed on every word, and was totally lost in the last episode when they found this beautiful meadow. I was speechless after I closed the book. I sat at the beach, and had it to myself again and again, that beautiful meadow, the peace, the harmony...
