Climates, by Andre Maurois

Written in 1928 by French biographer and novelist Andre Maurois, Climates became a best seller in France and all over Europe. The first 100,000 copies printed of its Russian translation sold out the day they appeared in Moscow bookstores. This magnificently written novel about a double conjugal failure is imbued with subtle yet profound psychological insights of a caliber that arguably rivals Tolstoy's. Here Phillipe Marcenat, an erudite yet conventional industrialist from central France, falls madly in love with and marries the beautiful but unreliable Odile despite his family's disapproval. Soon, Phillipe's possessiveness and jealousy drive her away. Brokenhearted, Phillipe then marries the devoted and sincere Isabelle and promptly inflicts on his new wife the very same woes he endured at the hands of Odile. But Isabelle's integrity and determination to save her marriage adds yet another dimension to this extraordinary work on the dynamics and vicissitudes of love.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, December 2012: Imagine (remember?) being a 14-year-old obsessed with understanding romantic love. You would have swooned for Climates, a beloved 1928 French best seller, newly translated. A novel about two marriages--one in which an insecure man drives away his ethereal (and probably crazy) wife, the other in which the same man subjects his loyal new wife to the kind of emotional torture he previously endured--it’s a kind of old-fashioned parable full of dramatic prose. (The beginning of the marital breakdown is described as “a fine crack [sent] through the transparent crystal of my love.”) But don’t dismiss this delightful novel by “Andr Maurois,” the pseudonym for French historian mile Herzog, as simply camp; it is strangely wise about a specific culture and time, as well as about the universal affairs of the heart. --Sara Nelson

"We love people because they secrete a mysterious essence, the one missing from our own formula."
By Mary Whipple
Philippe Marcenat, main character in this 1928 novel, newly translated by Sarah Bakewell, is writing a journal trying to explain to his second wife, Isabelle, his devastating past life with Odile, his first wife. He believes that if the quiet and accommodating Isabelle can only understand his life with the vivacious and exciting Odile, that Isabelle will be even more understanding of his thoughtless behavior during their own marriage. Starting his journal in the years immediately following World War I, Philippe reflects the pomposity and vanity with which he, and others of his time and class often treat the women in their lives. Though he wants to be honest, he is limited by his own attitudes and those of his culture.

Philippe, the son of a successful businessman in the French countryside, responds immediately to the beauty and creativity of Odile, whom he meets in Florence, but she is, unlike him, a woman who expresses her feelings publicly. He is far more repressed. After their marriage Philippe wants her all to himself, quickly growing jealous of her friendships with both men and women. He becomes demanding, and as the marriage deteriorates, he confesses, "I loathed her and adored her. I thought her innocent and guilty." She, in turn, blames him for putting her on a pedestal. "You ask too much of women."

Second wife Isabelle's story begins halfway through the novel. Years have passed since their marriage after World War I, and Philippe has just died. It is at this point that Isabelle begins her own journal. As Isabelle reveals their post-war courtship and marriage from her own point of view, the true nature of the marriage and the respective limitations of the characters become even clearer.

Philippe's posturing and his philosophical analyses throughout the novel reflect the moods (climates) of the day, and as he examines his ideas of love, his over-simplification of issues and his demeaning attitudes will not endear him to female readers. As for Isabelle, she believes that "We mustn't attach too much importance to the things that people we love do... So long as we can keep them, hold on to them...what does the rest matter?"

The novel, aided by the new translation, moves swiftly and smoothly through time, revealing much about the culture of France between the two wars. The two main characters, Philippe and Isabelle, do spend time making often ponderous statements, however. The author often states, rather than illustrates, Philippe's new insights. The palpable presence of three authors - Andre Maurois, Philippe, and Isabelle - all of them trying to control the attitudes of the reader - keep that reader at a distance, and though readers may see themselves in some aspects of some characters, they may not respond to these characters with great empathy. The novel is a product of its time, providing memorable insights into life between the wars, nearly seventy-five years ago.

Perspectives on love
By TChris
The nature of love and the different ways in which men and women experience it are at the heart of Climates. As a young Frenchman in the early years of the twentieth century, Philippe Marcenat's opinion of women is divided: he admires the female form but feels contempt for the female mind. Desire leads to boredom that can be overcome only by embarking on another conquest. He tells himself that he is searching for the "perfect, almost divine creature" he has imagined since his boyhood, but he finds true love only in the characters of the fiction he devours. Climates is the story of Philippe's relationships with three women -- women he loves in very different ways, and who influence his understanding of love.

Philippe's philandering life changes when he meets Odile Malet in Florence. Odile removes him from his "solitary meditation," makes him take note of the colorful world that surrounds him. It is only after they are married that a crack forms in the "transparent crystal" of Philippe's love. He discovers that Odile has a streak of independence. She lives in the moment, he lives mostly in the past, and they have the usual quarrels about which of them needs to change to accommodate the other's needs. Yet even after Odile gives Philippe good reason to think ill of her, he can form only positive thoughts of "her charm, her mysterious melancholy, her profound childishness."

The novel's second half shifts point of view from Philippe to Isabel, the woman Philippe marries long after losing Odile. Whether due to the change of perspective or because of his experience with Odile, we see a very different Philippe. He has no patience for "superficial sentimentality." While he doted on Odile, he is distant from Isabel. While he consciously overlooked Odile's flaws, he is critical of Isabel's taste and personality. While he wanted to spend all his time alone with Odile, he resents Isabel's desire to be alone with him.

In one respect, however, Philippe never changes: he spends his life searching for an ideal woman. He desperately wanted Odile to be that ideal, and then Isabel, although he recognizes that Isabel is no Odile. Eventually he befriends a woman named Solange, who is closer to Odile than other women he has known. Isabel finds it sad that "poor little Odile lived on in other women, in Solange, in me, each of us striving ... to reconstitute her long-lost grace." The futile search for an ideal (more than one woman accuses Philippe of placing women on pedestals) and the eagerness of women to attempt fulfillment of that ideal is one of Climates' most interesting themes. In one respect, it may be dated -- modern women are less likely to climb atop the pedestal -- but the futile search for imagined perfection retains currency.

The novel invites the reader to ask whether Philippe gains maturity from his relationships. He clearly develops a new (but not terribly flattering) understanding of women after his marriage to Odile: they are "unstable creatures always trying to find a strong directing force to pin down their wandering thoughts and longings," requiring a man to provide "a wealth of constantly changing interests and pleasures" to assure that his mate remains faithful. Near the end of the novel, Philippe lists his revised ideas, including the notion that women are governed by love rather than morality. Readers can form their own judgments as to the accuracy of the lessons that Philippe learns.

Readers can also ponder the conclusions that Isabel draws from her experiences: women in love have no independent personality, but adapt to meet the needs of their lovers; whether the people we love also love another isn't important so long as they love us when they are with us. Do her conclusions reveal her strength or, as her mother-in-law opines, her weakness?

Andr Maurois' lush, elegant prose and the directness with which he tells the story make Climates a quick read. A touch of melodrama is probably inevitable in a love story written in 1928, but it doesn't overwhelm the novel's subtle points. Fans of romance writing will find much to like in Philippe's heartfelt descriptions of Odile and of his love for her. In the end, I admired Climates for its differing perspectives of love and for the questions that the characters answer in their own ways. If I could, I would give Climates 4 1/2 stars.

"I love and am not loved. I am loved and do not love."
By Amelia Gremelspacher
In the preface, Maurois is cited with the above quote summarizing this book. Maurois himself had two relationships on which he based Climates. In fact he had his second wife, cruelly as it turns out, type and edit the transcript. In Climates, Phillipe has been raised in a reserved home within which emotions are not freely expressed. As an adult, he falls in love with, and marries, Odille. We would recognize Odille today as a bit of a flower child. In the early 1900's, she is a particular type who craves nature and simplicity. Phillipe gives himself over to her, until his jealousy develops. He is obsessed with her. He is consumed with jealousy. He scarcely knows how to speak with her.

His second marriage to Isabelle is built around his efforts to retrain her in Odille's image. He changes her wardrobe and her taste in reading. He deplores her wish to remain home. She is devoted to him and does all she can to please him. As it happens, this character is modeled after Maurois' second wife, thus the cruelty in her job of transcription.

The novel is written in two parts. The first is Phillipe's writing to Isabelle about his love for Odille, and the second is Isabelle's writing. In it she cites Phillipe's own journal.

Clearly this is a character driven novel. In this he joins the legions of French writers known for their examination of the realities of love. Love after all is the main character. It can be destroyed by jealousy, starved by neglect, or lost in the silence between words. Maurois attempts to be rigorously honest with himself and exposes Phillipe in all his frailties. It is a fascinating exploration of the triumphs and failures of love. Phillipe, Odille, and Isabelle are carefully crafted, and thoroughly revealed. This is a timeless treasure that continues to resonate almost a century later.

    Lost in the middle
    By Dimitri Shvorob
A problem with the other reviews is that they consider the book in isolation, as if no alternatives were available. "Practical data science" is not the only machine-learning-lite book on the market: Manning itself had published Harrington's Python-based "Machine learning in action", Packt offers "Machine learning with R" by Lantz, O'Reilly boasts "Doing data science" by Schutt and O'Neil, and, finally, Springer has "Introduction to statistical learning" by James, Witten, Hastie and Tibshirani. I have seen and reviewed all except Harrington's; for the purposes of this review, I'll ultra-briefly describe each contender ("Machine learning with R" - thin, average-quality, superficial, but effective at what it sets out to achieve; "Doing data science" - a mash-up of a textbook and a magazine article about kewl data scientists; below-average quality, but a lot of pop appeal; "Introduction to statistical learning" - high-quality, accessible and visually appealing textbook with R illustrations) and get to "Practical data science" - which, to me, comes across as a better-organized, earnest version of "Doing data science". The book's forte is its effort to go beyond a catalogue of R-illustrated machine-learning methods - and you have to have seen similar books to know how standard this repertoire is - and discuss practical skills useful to a budding "data scientist", from version control to presenting. I appreciate this effort, but feel that this content was not sufficiently substantial or polished to develop into a "unique selling proposition" of the kind that each of its competitors has - hence the title of my review.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

Effective starting point for your data science project
    By Christopher G. Loverich
tl;dr: A well rounded, occasionally high-level introductory text that will leave you feeling prepared to participate in the Data Science conversation at work, from earliest planning to presentation and maintenance.

    Details:

Was excited to see this book coming to publication. I'm a fan of practical, non-academic approaches to subjects and prefer working from concrete examples to abstract principles (rather than the other way around). I think this is both the most difficult and most needed type of resources that can be put into print. This book handles the task ok; it falls a bit short on practical, concrete, use cases as it alternates between working with hands on datasets and shotgun coverage of principles and techniques at a higher level. I'd have much preferred sticking with single data-sets for longer (say, a couple chapters per data set), but didn't feel cheated out of hands on work.

    Pros:
    - Easy access to the datasets via Github; good documentation on where to find others
    - Key Takeaways provided at end of chapter are good summaries of overall information provided.
    - A good focus on not just data analysis, but the process as a whole; very Agile like, practical, and non-dogmatic.
    - Battle tested advice: You can tell some of the advice comes from hard-fought battles - ex: Why not use the sample() function instead of manually creating a sample column? Because with a sample column, you can repeatably sample the same data (e.g. all columns < 2) for repeatable output and for regression testing (avoiding introducing bugs).
    - Builds your analyst vocabulary, increasing your all-important google-fu skills. Not knowing what to Google is, imho, the single hardest problem when learning a new set of problems / api's.
    - Good use of Appendices for introducing R syntax / installation, rather then stuffing it into one of the early chapters.

    Cons:
    - Doesn't stick with data sets long enough. I went to the trouble of setting up a true database to use the first dataset (chapter 2); only to move on to a different data set in the very next chapter (book did eventually return to the data set).
    - Feels a bit back and forth at times on whether it wants to be a truly pragmatic, focused work or a principles driven, broadly scoped book (thinking of chapters 5-7 here). Not necessarily a knock depending on what your looking for.

I've ready a few books on getting started in data analysis, R, statistics, etc. This book is solid enough that were I to choose among them, I'd recommend it first. I think if the book focused down on using data-sets for longer stretches, allowing you to learn the data well and apply multiple types of analyses on top of it (especially earlier on), it would be a bit more engaging.

Lastly, its has good coverage of R principles but (per its scope) doesn't get into the nitty gritty. I'd recommend "The Art of R Programming" for that, which would be a good companion to this book (e.g. covers R but not Data Analysis). I've heard R in Action is good as well, though haven't read it. Caveat emptor.

Disclaimer: I received a e-copy of the book from Manning for review.

    Good intro to data science
    By Scott C. Locklin
I've had to hire recent graduates with degrees in machine learning, operations research and even "data science." One of the problems with such people: they don't know anything practical. They probably know the basics of regression and some classification routines, as learned in their coursework. They've probably worked on one or many data science like problems, using machine learning techniques or regression or what not. Many of them have never done a SQL query, or done the dirty business of data cleaning which takes up most of the data scientist's time. They'll always have gaps in their education; maybe they wrote a dissertation on an application of trees or deep learning, and have never used any of the other myriad tools available to the data scientist. None of them have ever done data science for money, and so none of them know about practical things like git or what the process looks like in an industrial setting. It is for these people that this book appears to be written. In an ideal world, all larval data scientists would be taught a course based on this book, or at least go through it themselves. It is also useful to experienced practitioners, as it covers many things, and can be a good practical reference to keep around. The book is ordered as a data science project would be ordered, from start to finish; so, as you proceed down an engagement, reviewing the chapters in order will be helpful.

Ch1 describes the job of the data scientist, the workflow, and the characters you run into on a project.
Ch2 outlines some of the tools used to get at the data, including the authors tool, "SQL Screwdriver." I'd have liked some genuflections at the unix tools used to clean data before it is put anywhere important; sed, awk, tr, sort and cut here, but I'm not sure if there is a graceful way of doing this. Or perhaps I'm the only weirdo who uses these in the ETL process.
Ch3 exploring data; using the various plot utilities in ggplot2 (the graphics library everyone should be using); bar charts, histograms, summary statistics and scatter plots.
Ch4 managing data: what they call "cleaning data" -I call reshaping data (and I use reshape, sometimes anyway; I would have mentioned this, though I got on well without it for years)
Ch5 gets into specifying the problem; is it a classification problem? scoring? recommendation engine? How do I quantify success? This chapter is very helpful in doing this. Of course, problems evolve over time, and customers change their minds, but there are very helpful mappings here which will point you in the right direction There are a few new techniques which should probably be included in future editions of this chapter, depending on how they pan out: I'm impressed with using drop out techniques to prevent overfitting, for example (this is bleeding edge stuff, generally in context of deep learning).
Ch6 Memorization techniques covers Naive Bayes, KNN and decision trees. It would have been nice to have more information on the various kinds of variable selection techniques (particularly important for NB and KNN), but mentioning this will allow the practitioner to go find their own information.
Ch7 Logistic and Linear regression: most would have done these first, but these are actually more complex than memorization techniques, and there are more things to know to keep the practitioner out of trouble. In my opinion, this chapter really shines: everyone who is going to do this for a living has had some exposure to regression models: this chapter makes it practical.
Ch8 Unsupervised methods; covers clustering; heirarchical clustering (one of the most useful tricks you will use in data science), kmeans (it has to be done, though I never found it to be useful) and association rules.
Ch9 Advanced methods: GAMs, SVM, bagging and random forests (the importance measure trick: if you don't know it, pay attention: this is a very good trick). These are the "industrial strength" tools used in industry. I, personally would have stuck GAMs in their own chapter, and mentioned boosting here, but everyone is a little different in their tastes.
Ch10 Documentation and deployment: they use Knitr; I just use vanilla Sweave (I've tried brew, but never took to it). They introduce git here: something I would have done in chapter 1 or 2, but it is a fairly natural place to mention it. They use the Rook tool to deploy HTTP services; I've never used it, though I have used Shiny, which I can recommend. They mention PMML briefly (I've never used it).

The appendix on R is helpful, though it doesn't include the most valuable advice of all for using R in production: you need to maintain a distribution of R and all used packages, as well as a dependency toolchain if the code will be deployed on multiple servers.

Paris-London Connection: The Assassination of Princess Diana, by John Morgan

Paris-London Connection is the most shocking yet factual book written on the 1997 Paris crash that took the lives of Princess Diana and her lover, Dodi Fayed. This fast-moving but authoritative narrative covers the events leading up to and following the tragedy. The book is a short, quick read, under 200 pages, but is a bombshell because it closely follows the evidence and forensic analysis included in the 5,000 pages of the Diana Inquest book series. That series draws together the evidence from the French investigation, the British Operation Paget investigation, the 2007-8 London inquest and hundreds of British police documents not shown to the inquest jury. Members of Britain?s royal family, MI6 officers and agents, senior French police personnel and Western intelligence agencies all played a role in the events in Paris. Exposed for the first time is the specific role of the key senior MI6 officer, Sherard Cowper-Coles. The book reveals the people who ordered the assassination of Diana and Dodi and those who carried out the operation and how they did it. It also shows how the authorities covered up what occurred and the significant connection between events in France and the UK, both before and after the crash. 27 inquest witnesses, both French and British, who committed perjury at the London inquest are named for the first time. Paris-London Connection reveals the level of coordinated state-authorised corruption in the conduct of the French and British police investigations and the inquest headed by Lord Justice Scott Baker. This is the long awaited book that uses the actual witness and documentary evidence to reveal the who, how and why of the assassination of Britains much-loved Princess Diana. John Morgan is author of the Diana Inquest book series. Prominent British QC, Michael Mansfield, who served at the London inquest, has said: I have no doubt that the volumes written by John Morgan will come to be regarded as the Magnum Opus on the crash ... and the cover-up that followed. Mohamed Al Fayed, who lost his son Dodi in the crash, has stated: I believe that John Morgan has done more to expose the facts of this case than the police in France and Britain

    Finally some answers!!!
    By Vivienne H.
This is a great book and it answers a lot of questions that seem to have been swept under the rug to avoid a full blown world wide investigation. There is absolutely no way it takes that long to get someone to the hospital after an car wreck, especially when someone is as famous as Princess Diana! Breaks my heart to think of her gone and that she was cheated out of her children and now her grandchild. This wasn't an accident.
It seems there are alot of folks that have blood on their hands surrounding the death of Princess Diana along with Dodi and Henri. The book is filled with information and does address lots of questions and makes you aware of many things that took place and gives details of a coverup. Great book, but very sad.

A really concise book about the assassination of Princess Diana.
    By jmr13
I really liked the way the book was written. It doesn't go off on tangents, the way some other authors have. It presents a clear picture of what really happened, so you can follow the conspiracy in a logical fashion.

Also it brings to the forefront some important facts that are never brought out, such as the fact that there were three other hospitals that were closer than the hospital that the ambulance finally arrived at. Also the ambulance drove by the front door of one of the hospitals!

It just seems sad that no one could protect her, not even a very wealthy man. MI5 and MI6 have notorious reputations for bumping people off. Stalin told Elliott Roosevelt that the "Churchill Gang" had poisoned President Franklin Roosevelt and Stalin said they were trying to poison him. See L. Fletcher Prouty's book, JFK: The CIA, Vietnam.and the Plot to Assassinate JFK for that reference.

    Died too soon

Good book. I do believe the grey coats had her killed. They needed her out of the way to set up Charles I his new life and marriage to Camilla to take the throne. The people had to let Diana go and accept Camilla so she had to be taken out. She conceived the future king and her purpose was over formthemroyal bloodlines. Too much attention was bomb given to her and her work and she had to be stopped. Land mines were very acceptable by many other nations and it put a crimp in their use of the.

Fighting Terrorism: How Democracies Can Defeat Domestic and International Terrorists, by Benjamin Netanyahu

In this innovative and concise work, Israeli politician Benjamin Netanyahu offers a compelling approach to understanding and fighting the increase in domestic and international terrorism throughout the world. Citing diverse examples from around the globe, Netanyahu demonstrates that domestic terrorist groups are usually no match for an advanced technological society which can successfully roll back terror without any significant curtailment of civil liberties. But Netanyahu sees an even more potent threat from the new international terrorism which is increasingly the product of Islamic militants, who draw their inspiration and directives from Iran and its growing cadre of satellite states. The spread of fundamentalist Islamic terrorism, coupled with the possibility that Iran will acquire nuclear weapons, poses a more frightening threat from an adversary less rational and therefore less controllable than was Soviet Communism. How democracies can defend themselves against this new threat concludes this provocative book.

    Profound thoughts on Terrorism
    By William C. Hester
Three words come to mind after reading this introduction to the state of modern terrorism: Prescient, Provocative, and Profound.
Even if the reader does not agree with everything in the book, he would in all fairness have to admit that there is nothing confusing, imprecise, or wishy-washy about its contents.
After thoughtfully considering this book's contents, especially in view of recent events, I inescapably arrived at the conclusion that there is no justification whatsoever for terrorism of any sort, that terrorism, at its basic level, merely seeks to take power, however violently or bloodily, from one set of hands and place it in another set of hands (namely and coincidentally, the hands of the terrorists and/or their sponsors). It seems that terrorism, by its very nature, cannot involve any form of honest altruism.
In a certain very real sense, after reading this book, one cannot walk away feeling particularly good; the threat of modern terrorism is frightening and forces one to take a real look at the world he lives in. One feels disturbed at a visceral level, knowing that whoever he is or wherever he lives, he is not immune to the threat of terrorism.
I find myself wishing/wondering what I can personnaly do to help eradicate the cancer of terrorism. I will look further.

Faces the problem head on! Highly recommended.
    By M. D Roberts
A first class book befitting the present climate following the September 11th terrorist attacks upon the US and the Palestinian terrorist upsurge against Israeli civilians in the Mid-East.
Most people will be aware of Benjamin Netanyahu's history as a former Prime Minister of Israel, but few are aware of his service as a soldier in an elite anti-terrorist unit in the Israeli army. Netanyahu having considerable experience of fighting terrorism on the diplomatic, political and also military battlefields.
Netanyahu pulls no punches in his direct, vigorous assault upon terrorism. This latest edition being published since the aforementioned terrorist attacks and includes reference and comment in relation to them.
Anti-terrorism measures voiced by Netanyahu are weighed against the question of civil liberties and he also projects his views on the rise of Militant Islam and the nuclear threat provided by terrorist entities.
The author candidly and honestly declares his opinion that, what is at stake today in facing the present upsurge of terrorism and fundamentalism, is nothing less than the survival of our civilisation. He advocates that any such talk in apocalyptic terms which might have been irrelevant exaggeration some ten years ago, is now becoming an accepted fact of life.
Despite such a shocking affirmation, the former Israeli PM expresses confidence that the threat can be successfully tackled if the enormous reserves of power and facilities at the disposal of the West are appropriately and quickly marshalled.
Netanyahu believes that no international terrorism can flourish without the support of sovereign states. He maintains that the latter train, arm and indoctrinate the terrorists within safe havens provided by these regimes, who more often than not share their agendas, dispatching these groups or individuals to serve as their proxies of terror.
The views of the author have been proved true and accurate time and time again as the `war against terrorism' continues.
One need look no further than Iran, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories. Fundamentalist Islamic terrorist groups are granted freedom to operate and receive the financial and political support from all these entities. Not to mention Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
Arafat's rule in the Palestinian autonomous areas has seen the freedom and approval for the running of summer camps in Gaza where Palestinian children are openly seen receiving training to become suicide bombers, with undisguised instruction in the merits of martyrdom and the methods of murder. Yet the world looks on with apparent or wilful impotence.
The author proclaims that `the success of terrorists in one part of the terror network emboldens terrorists throughout the network'. Enough said.
Netanyahu adds that such small groups and
individuals `...nullify in large measure the need to have air power or intercontinental missiles as delivery systems for an Islamic nuclear payload, as...they will be the delivery system'.
The world would be foolish to ignore such a warning and it's potential consequences, especially with the hindsight of September 11th.
The author asks the question, "..do we rally to defeat this evil, while there is still time, or do we press a collective snooze button and go back to business as usual ?"
He continues to assert that, whilst the fight against terrorism might inflict some innocent civilian casualties, this in itself does not constitute a 'terrorism' of it's own, as some would argue.
Such casualties,he states, are entirely unintentional, indeed regrettable, but are tragedies by comparison and appropriate measures must be taken to minimise them.
To the contrary, terrorists do not unintentionally harm civilians! They deliberately murder, maim and menace civilians...in fact as many as conceivably possible!
It is Netanyahu's opinion that NOTHING can justify terrorism. No cause, grievance or agenda, irrespective of the opponent, state or race.
He asserts that any cause that uses terrorism to advance it's aims must NOT be rewarded, or seen to be rewarded...or accepted.
The recent climate of trying to equate or describe some terrorists as `freedom fighters' is like a cancer to such commendable anti-terror standards. Those promoting such a questionable policy must have their own agendas closely scrutinised, as they perhaps have a 'goal' of their own.
The author quite rightly affirms that the situation cannot be dismissed that a militant terrorist state could SOON use it's `proxies' to threaten or even launch a nuclear, chemical or biological attacks with apparent impunity.
Nor can the prospect be ignored that a militant regime would commit 'collective suicide' for the sake of a fanatical ideology. Such a scenario would inflict hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of civilian casualties.
Therefore the author is clear in his stand that EVERYTHING must be done to prevent such regimes (eg. Iraq, Iran) from developing such weapons or neutralising those already in their possession. Netanyahu suggests that a coalition be built around this very mission.
Although not a large book, (some 150 pages in the paperback version), it packs a considerable punch. Highly recommended read !

Fighting Terrorism: How Democracies Can Defeat Domestic and
    By Frequent buyer
An outstanding work by a leader of a nation that knows all too well the horrors of terrorism.
As a democracy - Israel provides more rights to its Arab populace (voting, owning property, freedom to voice differing opinions) than they have in ANY Arab state- Israel faces the same challenges that America now confronts.
Natanyahu's book should serve as a primer to our leaders that only through forcing terrorists and the nations that harbor them to pay an enormous price for foisting terror on noncombatants can we possibly avoid repeating September 11.

Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) have accompanied mankind from its very early beginnings. Their utilization has co-evolved with homo sapiens itself bringing about a profound increase in our scientific knowledge of these species enabling them to be used in many facets of our life (e.g. pharmaceutical products, feed- and food additives, cosmetics, etc.). Remarkably, despite the new renaissance of MAPs usage, ca. 80 % of the world’s population is relying on natural substances of plant origin, with most of these botanicals sourced from the wild state. This first volume and ultimately the series, provides readers with a wealth of information on medicinal and aromatic plants.

Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) have accompanied mankind from its very early beginnings. Their utilization has co-evolved with homo sapiens itself. Evolution has brought about a profound increase in our scientific knowledge about these species, so that, to date, they find utilization in many facets of our life (eg. pharmaceutical products, feed- and food additives, cosmetics, etc.). Remarkably today, despite the new renaissance of MAPs usage,ca. 80 % of the world’s population relies upon natural substances of plant origin, with most of these botanicals sourced from the wild state. This hugeincrease indemand has put an unparalleled large burden on the natural resources of MAPs endangering their existence.
The first volume of theseries Medicinal Plants of the World, will briefly summarize the most essential current scientific knowledge about the sustainable sourcing of botanicals from both wild-crafting and cultivation. In these 21 chapters, eminent researchers of the topic will summarize latest scientific knowledge from the versatile and most varied scientific disciplines involved: botany, phytochemistry, plant breeding, biotechnology, agrotechnology, mechanization and economics. Individual chapters will deal with the essentials of phytomedical utilization, as well as utilization in the form of animal feed-additives. The volume concludes with a chapter on the poisonous MAPs in our homes, offices and modern everyday environments.
The aim of this volume is to offer basic scientific information on MAPs. It will also enable readers of subsequent volumes to digest andinterpret theother volumes in theseries, that will deal with important and characteristic wild-crafted and cultivated MAPs of the different geographic andclimatic regions of the world.
Thus, the series is meant to be a storehouse of up-to-date information on our global wealth of medicinal and aromatic plants on the basis of which MAPs will be collected, cultivated, traded and utilized in a sustainable way.

Boston Against Busing: Race, Class, and Ethnicity in the 1960s and 1970s, by Ronald P. Formisano

Perhaps the most spectacular reaction to court-ordered busing in the 1970s occurred in Boston, where there was intense and protracted protest. Ron Formisano explores the sources of white opposition to school desegregation. Racism was a key factor, Formisano argues, but racial prejudice alone cannot explain the movement. Class resentment, ethnic rivalries, and the defense of neighborhood turf all played powerful roles in the protest.

In a new epilogue, Formisano brings the story up to the present day, describing the end of desegregation orders in Boston and other cities. He also examines the nationwide trend toward the resegregation of schools, which he explains is the result of Supreme Court decisions, attacks on affirmative action, white flight, and other factors. He closes with a brief look at the few school districts that have attempted to base school assignment policies on class or economic status.

    From Publishers Weekly
This work offers a convincing and dispassionate assessment of an emotionally charged subject: court-ordered school desegregation in Boston and, most particularly, the white backlash associated with it. Calling the conflict a "war that nobody won," Formisano ( The Transformation of Political Culture: Massachusetts Parties, 1780s-1840s ) examines the social and economic roots of what he terms "reactionary populism," concluding that more than simple racism underlay it. Class was an important issue, as evidenced by the frustration of city residents dictated to by legislators and members of the media whose own children attended schools in the "lily white suburbs," beyond the reach of the controversial desegregation plan. He describes the variety of white responses to the court order, for example, South Boston's collective hard-core resistance in marches and clashes with police and West Roxbury's more individualist (white flight) and legalist approach. Here, too, are the public characters, such as Boston School Councillor Louise Hicks, and the street theater of protest, such as a mothers' prayer march led by Hicks counting her rosary beads.

    From Library Journal
Sailing in the wake of Common Ground , J. Anthony Lukas's prize-winning study of Boston's busing crisis ( LJ 8/85), Formisano focuses upon the white antibusers who, he believes, were more diverse in motivation and tactics than the rock-throwing mobs on television. Using interviews, press accounts, and the enormous secondary literature, he argues, as have Lukas and others, that race and class were knotted together in this "war nobody won." Formisano writes with empathy for the antibusers yet doesn't dismiss their racism; he finds little to praise between both sides' principals and concludes that school desegregation must confront "suburban residential apartheid." Lukas's journalistic tour de force is still the book to read on busing in Boston, but this, the most accessible scholarly work, may be the book to study. It is recommended for most academic and many public libraries.

    Review
Formisano's analysis of race relations in Boston is extended into the present day in this revised edition. Formisano explores the sources of working and middle-class white opposition to school desegregation, which contained elements of racism, class resentment, ethnic rivalries, and the defense of neighborhood turf.

Interesting account of a controversial and turbulent time
    By Battleship
Ronald Forminsano has presented a fascinating look at the famous Boston busing crisis of the 1970's. He does a good job of establishing the basic facts and identifying the major players in the crisis. He gives a penetrating look at Judge Arthur Garrity who mandated that the South Boston white students be bused to Roxbury and the black students from Roxbury be bused to South Boston.

This mandate was very controversial from the beginning. President Gerald Ford spoke out as thinking the move was ill-advised. Boston mayor Kevin White tried his best to implement the judge's decision. He had his hands full with vocal opponents like Louise Day Hicks, John Kerrigan, and Pixie Palladino.

Formisano points out that there was a populist backlash from the residents of South Boston. Parents resented the fact that their children were selected for integration. The situation on the ground was turbulent as white students were persecuted in the black community and vice versa.

Formisano admitted that there were some problems with the mandate. However, he generally supported the plan as a means to establish overdue integration of the districts. The problem is that South Boston and Roxbury families were chosen to be pawns in a war that was not of their choosing. I believe that people have the right to receive and education in the region where they live. Roxbury and South Boston were not able to effectively protest the move because the residents were from a low socio-economic level and were not able to establish influential connections.

Roxbury and South Boston were arbitrary sources for Judge Garrity's social engineering experiment. Boston suburbs like Newton and Wellsley are lily-white and were even more in need of an influx of racial diversity. These wealthy and well-connected communities were not forced to integrate. The parents in those districts would have likely fought integration efforts with passion. However, these same "enlightened" parents were often proponents of the busing policies. As long as it did not effect their children, they supported the mandate. I find this to be very hypocritical and that the mandate unfairly discriminated against poorer students and families.

In the end, the busing policy did not benefit whites or blacks. A whole generation of students suffered the scars of being on the front line of this highly-politicized battle. I have friends who lived throught the crisis and they almost unanimously tell me that this policy was a complete disaster and a failed social experiment.

There was need for communities to integrate. There is no denying this fact. However, the integration could have occurred in a less-intrusive manner. For example, the METCO program is more voluntary and has enabled African-American children to broaden their horizons and have opportunities that would not ordinarily available. White communities benefit from the diversity in such instances. This was not the case in the Boston busing crisis. No one was the winner in this failed social experiment.

Overall, I liked Formisano's book. He outlined the basic information of the case. He argued the pros and cons of the controversy. He identified the supporters and opponents of the mandate with clarity. I disagree with his overall position, but I found the work to be heartfelt and sincere. The book was well-written and I learned a lot about this controversial period in Boston history that became a national news story in the contentious 1970's.

My Mother is on the cover!
    By Maria-Elena L. Hurld
A relative found this book and called me to take a look at it. That is definitely my mother Mazie Boulet, on the cover.
The little boy was with someone else that was cut out of the picture.
She was in Washington on a march to Stopping Forced Busing with other mothers of all races from Boston's multiple communities. It was raining buckets.
The facts in the book were NOT very accurate. My mom went though and made side notes of corrections. LOL!!
The man that wrote it is not even from Boston, he's in Florida.
My mother loved it as a present though.
