A fun fantasy but that was it.
    By truthseeker
I was a bit hesitant to buy this book and try it but it was highly recommended so I decided to give it a try. This book was both enjoyable and enlightening but also annoying and impractical. Enjoyable and enlightening because I got to act as if I had a lot of money and see what that would like. I was happy to discover by the end of the process, that I had given half of my money away and the half I used for me was spent in a very sustainable manner. The book was annoying to me when it incorporated sayings by the Dalai Lama and other "famous" beings in order to support the idea that everyone can become rich and for that matter probably should. There were really annoying statements about imagining what it would be and feel like to live an opulent lifestyle.
I tried to imagine a world with seven billion wealthy human beings and calculate the resources used to build them all huge houses, cloth their bodies extravagantly, drape their arms in cold and jewels, and so forth and then the planet exploded and was gone. And I wondered who was going to serve the seven billion wealthy humans when there weren't masses of human beings held back in poverty in order to serve the rich. That might sound strange to some folks, but think about it and go online and connect the dots concerning your consumption of food, clothing, beverages, wood, metals, etc.
I have always been content to live a simple life, have plenty to eat, warm comfortable clothing to wear, friends and family to love, have shelter from the storm, good transportation and most of all feel connected to my community. Sometimes when reading this book, I wondered if I should feel that having enough wasn't really enough. That I needed more, more, and more of everything and bigger too! Should I be happy in my cozy little house surrounded by a beautiful garden I created? Wouldn't a mansion with servants and a gardener be better?
Unfortunately, I can't report that my income has doubled or tripled since I read this book and did the exercises. In the months thereafter, I actually ended up spending more on taxes, car repair, and other items than I planned on and no extra money came in. But I am happy to report that I still have enough and that my life is full of joy, peace, and contentment. There are some things that millions of dollars can't buy...

Incredible. What a journey! Extraordinary tool.
    By Patrick Combs
This book isn't just for reading. It's for interacting with it's 21 day suggested plan for creating your own Millionaire's Map. I followed the book's instructions exactly, one day at a time. I loved each day's content and each day's assignment. I have a shelf full of books about money (I'm a high-six figure earner myself) and this book is now my absolute favorite to recommend to friends and clients. I'd never experienced my own thoughts and feelings about money and abundance until I read this masterful book. This book makes it very clear, that there is extraordinary value in gaining clarity about exactly what you'd spend ever increasing amounts of money on. And you think you know what you'd do with massive money, but this book proves that you don't know, until you've actually mapped your way through it, one day and one increasing dollar amount at a time. It's an absolutely expansive and exhilarating process. If you have a serious interest in prosperity and money, I'd say this book is an absolute must. Genius, really.

    Practicing Abundance
    By Dianne Duncan Perrote
This book has been instrumental in changing my life. Briefly, since I began working with The Millionaire's Map my income has increased threefold. Initially, I was doing contract work which was filled with great opportunity, however, it was inconsistant. Working with The Millionaire's Map I got steady work in the bottom of the Grand Canyon and so doubled my income! Recognizing the great potential I continued practicing the exercises in The Millionaire's Map. Before the year was out I was offered a national position which more than double my income! I continue to observe that the principles taught in the The Millionaire's Map work in my life. Because it is a process and a daily practice, it continues to infuse my life with POSSIBILITY. In the current economic climate I have gleened the tools I need to create my next steps. It is genius. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!

Angels in My Hair, by Lorna Byrne

"Angels In My Hair" is the autobiography of a modern day mystic, an Irish woman with powers of the saints of old. When she was a child, people thought Lorna was 'retarded' because she did not seem to be focusing on the world around her, instead Lorna was seeing angels and spirits. As Lorna tells the story of her life, the reader meets, as she did, the creatures from the spirit worlds who also inhabit our own - mostly angels of an astonishing beauty and variety - including the prophet Elijah and an Archangel - but also the spirits of people who have died. This remarkable document is the testimony of a woman who sees things, beyond the range of our everyday experience.

    Chapter 1

    Through different eyes

When I was two years old the doctor told my mother I was "retarded."

When I was a baby, my mother noticed that I always seemed to be in a world of my own. I can even remember lying in a cot--a big basket--and seeing my mother bending over me. Surrounding my mother I saw wonderful bright, shiny beings in all the colors of the rainbow; they were much bigger than I was, but smaller than her--about the size of a three-year-old child. These beings floated in the air like feathers; and I remember reaching out to touch them, but I never succeeded. I was fascinated by these creatures with their beautiful lights. At that time I didn't understand that I was seeing anything different from what other people saw; it would be much later that I learned from them that they were called angels.

As the months passed, my mother noticed that I'd always be looking or staring somewhere else, no matter what she'd do to try to get my attention. In truth, I was somewhere else: I was away with the angels, watching what they were doing and talking and playing with them. I was enthralled.

I was a late talker, but I had been conversing with angels from very early on. Sometimes we used words as you and I understand them, but sometimes no words were needed--we would know each other's thoughts. I believed that everyone else could see what I saw, but then the angels told me that I was not to say anything to anyone about seeing them, that I should keep it a secret between us. In fact, for many years I listened to the angels and I didn't tell people what I saw. It is only now in writing this book that I am for the first time telling much of what I have seen.

The doctor's comment when I was just two was to have a profound effect on my life: I realized that people can be very cruel. At the time I was born, in 1953, my parents lived in Old Kilmainham, near the center of Dublin. My father rented a little bicycle repair shop there, which had a cottage attached. If you walked through the shop and around to the left you would come to a tiny and fairly dilapidated house. It was part of a row of old cottages and shops, but most of them were empty or abandoned because they were in such bad condition. For much of the time we lived in the one little room downstairs: here we cooked, ate, talked, played, and even washed in a big metal basin in front of the fire. Although the house had no bathroom, outside in the back garden, down a little path, was a shed with a loo. Upstairs there were two small bedrooms; at first I shared one of the bedrooms, and a bed, with my older sister Emer.

It wasn't just angels I was seeing (and I saw them constantly--from the moment I woke up until I went to sleep), but also the spirits of people who had died. My brother, Christopher, had been born a year before me but he had died when he was only about ten weeks old. Although I never saw him while he was alive, I could visualize him--he was dark haired, while my sister and I were fair--and I could also play with him in spirit.

At the time I thought there was nothing strange about this; it felt as if he was just another child, although he seemed a little brighter in appearance. One of the first things that made me realize that he was different, though, was that his age could change. Sometimes he appeared as a baby, but other times he looked about the same age as me, toddling across the floor. He wasn't there constantly, either, but seemed to come and go.

Late one cold winter afternoon, just as it was getting dark, I was alone in the little living room of the house in Old Kilmainham. There was fire in the open fireplace, which was the only light in the room. The firelight flickered across the floor where I was sitting playing with little wooden building blocks that my father had made. Christopher came to play with me. He sat nearer the fire--he said that it was too hot for me where he was, but it was okay for him as he didn't feel the heat. Together we built a tower. I would put one brick down and he would put another on top of it. The tower was getting very tall and then, suddenly, our hands touched. I was amazed--he felt so different from other people I touched. When I touched him he sparked; it was as if there were little stars flying. At that moment I went into him (or perhaps he went into me); it was as if we merged and became one. In my shock I knocked over our tower of blocks!

I burst out laughing, then I touched him again. I think that was the first time I fully realized that he wasn't flesh and blood.

I never confused Christopher with an angel; the angels I saw did sometimes have a human appearance, but when they did, most of them had wings and their feet did not touch the ground and they had a sort of bright light shining inside them. Some of the time the angels I saw would have no human aspect at all, but appeared as a sharp glowing light.

Christopher appeared around my mum a lot. Sometimes Mum would be sitting in the chair by the fire and would doze off, and I'd see him cradled in her arms. I didn't know whether my mother was aware of Christopher's presence so I asked him, "Will I tell Mum that you're here?"

"No, you can't tell her," he replied. "She won't understand. But sometimes she feels me."

One winter morning the angels came to my bed as the sun was coming up. I was curled up under the blankets; my sister Emer, with whom I shared the bed, was up and about and instead Christopher was curled up beside me. He tickled me and said, "Look, look, Lorna--over at the window."

As I have said, angels can appear in different forms and sizes; this morning they looked like snowflakes! The glass in the window seemed to become a vapor, and as each snowflake hit the window it was transformed into an angel about the size of a baby. The angels were then carried on a beam of sunlight through the window, and each one seemed to be covered in white and shiny snowflakes. As the angels touched me the snowflakes fell from them onto me; they tickled as they landed and, surprisingly, they felt warm, not cold.

"Wouldn't it be wonderful," Christopher said, "if everybody knew that they could fill their pockets with angels; that they could fit thousands of angels into one pocket, just like with snowflakes, and could carry them around with them and never be alone."

I turned and asked, "What if they melted in their pockets?"

Christopher giggled and said, "No! Angels never melt!"

I rather sadly replied, "Christopher, I wish that you could fit in my mum's pocket like a snowflake, and be there for her all the time."

He turned and looked at me, as we were cuddled up in bed, and said, "You know I'm there already."

When I was an adult my mother told me she had had a baby son called Christopher who had been born a year before me but had only lived ten weeks. I just smiled in response. I remember asking her where Christopher was buried, and she told me that it was in an unmarked grave (as was the custom in those days) in a baby's graveyard in Dublin.

It's sad that there is no grave with his name on it that I can go and visit, but he's not forgotten. Sometimes even now, all these years later, I feel Christopher's hand in my pocket pretending to make snowflakes, reminding me I am never alone.

I learned more about Christopher and my mother one day when I was about four or five years old. I was sitting at the table swinging my legs and eating breakfast when I caught a glimpse of Christopher looking as if he were about twelve years old, running across the room to the shop door just as my mother walked in with some toast. She had a big smile on her face as she said, "Lorna, there is a surprise for you in the back workroom under Da's workbench!"

I jumped up from the table, all excited, and followed Christopher. He went straight through the shop and into the dark workshop; I had to stop at the door because it was so dark in there that I couldn't see anything and I needed my eyes to adjust to the darkness. However, Christopher was just like a light, a soft shimmering glow that lit up a path for me through the cluttered workshop. He called out, "The cat has had kittens!" And there, thanks to Christopher's light, I could see four tiny little kittens--three were _jet-_black, and one was black and white. They were so beautiful, so soft and glossy. The mother cat, Blackie, got out of the box, stretched herself, then jumped out of the little window into the garden. I ran after her and called to Christopher to come too, but he would not come into the garden.

I walked back in and asked Christopher, "Why wouldn't you come outside?"

He took my hand, as if to comfort me--I loved the touch of his hand--and our hands merged again. It felt magical; it made me feel safe and happy.

"Lorna, when babies die their spirits stay with their mothers for as long as they are needed, so I stay here with Mum. If I went outside it would be like breaking those memories--and that I won't do!"

Even at that young age, I knew what he meant. My mother had poured so much love into him: all the memories she had of being pregnant and carrying him inside her, the birth, the joy and the happiness she had holding him in her arms and bringing him home--when even then she had a feeling that something was wrong, despite what the doctors told her. Mum had a precious few weeks at home with Christopher before he died, and Christopher told me of all the love that she had poured on him, and he now poured that love on her.

So my spirit brother would remain in the house, never going out, until the day came when it seemed that my mum felt strong enough to move on and was ready to let my little brother go. That day was the day when we had to leave that little shop in Old Kilmainham for good.

When I see an angel I want to stop and stare; I feel like I am in the presence of a tremendous power. When I was younger the angels generally adopted a human form--to make it easier for me to accept them--but now that's no longer necessary. The angels I see don't always have wings, but when they do I am sometimes amazed by their form; occasionally they are like flames of fire, and yet they have shape and solidity. Some of the angels' wings have feathers; one angel had wings that were so slender, tall, and pointed that I found it hard to _believe that they were wings. I wanted to ask the angel to open them up.

When angels have a human appearance--with or without wings--their eyes are one of their most fascinating features. Angel eyes are not like human eyes; they are so alive, so full of life and light and love. It's as if they contain the essence of life itself--their radiance fills you completely.

I have never seen an angel's feet actually touch the ground; when I see one walking toward me I see what looks like a cushion of energy between the ground and their feet. Sometimes it looks like a thin thread, but other times this cushion grows between the earth and the angel, and even sinks into the earth itself.

Ever since I was very young there was one particular angel who used to appear to me often. The first time I saw him he was in the corner of the bedroom and he just said, "Lorna." In some ways he looked like other angels, but there was something different about him, too; he shone more strongly than the others and he had a commanding presence, a powerful force of male strength. From that first time I saw him I always felt he was ready to protect me, like a shield, and from then on he kept appearing and gradually I befriended him. He told me his name was Michael.

School was difficult for me; most of the teachers treated me as if I were slow. My First Holy Communion was at school when I was six, and it was horrible. It should have been a very special day--as it is for most Irish children. When we were preparing for First Holy Communion in the classroom the teachers would ask the children questions, checking that they had learned their catechism, but they wouldn't bother with me; they'd say, "There is no point asking you!" And when all the other children had to stand in line and say something about the Communion, I would stand in line, too, but then I'd be dragged out and told to go and sit down. As a young child this really hurt. So while I sat down at the back of the class or on one of the benches in the corner I'd ask my angels, "Don't they know that I know my catechism, too? They aren't even giving me a chance."

Then in church on my First Communion day, as I finally made my way up to the altar I was grabbed by the arm and pulled out of the queue again because the teacher decided that the better girls should go ahead of me.

There were some kind people, though; when I was about four there was a nun called (I think) Mother Moderini. She had been told that I was slow and "retarded," but I felt she knew better. When I was in her class she would come down and ask me little questions to which I always knew the answer, so then she'd smile and rub my head.

But despite these occasional acts of kindness from a few people, I grew up an outsider. People could see that I was different and they just couldn't understand it. That aspect of my life has been very, very hard--and it still is today. People say I'm too trusting, too truthful for this world, but I cannot be any other way! The strange thing is, that to be truthful in every way--in how you think and in how you speak--and to be truthful to those around you is hard and it does tend to isolate you.

The way people think about or look at me does affect me greatly even now. Even though they may not know me, or know what I do, they know that on some level I am different. If I go out with friends and meet someone new who knows nothing about me, they will often report back to my friends that there is something unusual about me, something that they can't quite put their finger on. This can be difficult to live with.

In many ways Lorna repeats herself in this book. At time I didn't want to finish it, but I did. I do believe in angels and I know that I have a Guardian Angel, but considering the number of Angels Lorna sees and talks to it's a wonder I have never heard of her before. Seems to me that someone with this much contact with not only Angels, but Archangels and even Jesus and God himself would at one time or other been in contact with the Pope. Seems that she should have received some sort of public messages to help us on our journey here on earth. I believe Lorna is a woman of faith, and I think she feels a calling to help people on their journey through life and that's all well and good because we do need positive influences in our life and if she can ease the burden of others by praying over them and letting them know their is no need to fear death then so be it. I think some of the bravest souls I have met have been people who work in hospice, as well as the caregivers of the dying, as they too help those who are no longer aided by medical cures crossover. We need to have faith and we need to live each moment as if it were our last, but in living that moment we must do it lovingly and with trust in God.

    A blessing and rare find
    By Sioux
I love working with the healing arts and angels. My 76 year-old mother actually found this book in a used book store (across the USA from me) and had such an exciting awakening and major life shift in consciousness. Thank you so much for that! She, of course, then recommended this book to me.

The reality of life for a beautiful soul with the gift of seeing and conversing angels really opened my eyes. I loved every moment, every word that Lorna wrote in her endearing and heart wrenching tale. I suppose I thought if one could just be in such daily communion with angels, have a visual and ongoing guiding dialogue with them, life would be a piece of cake. Not necessarily so....

Lorna led a very difficult life, riddled with financial and emotional hardship, yet her faith and love for God and the Angels kept her as strong as anyone could hope to be. She's a heroine, a superwoman, modeling how life can throw us constant and extreme challenges, yet we can stay in a loving relationship with all that is.

Lorna truly is a diamond surrounded by coal in so many ways, yet she shines through the darkest of the dark and others find their way through her light. Bless you, dear Lorna, for sharing your inspiring tale.... one I will recommend at the top of my list.

    Sharing the Gift of Angels
    By Lucky Lucy
I love this book. I have read it many times. Even though I do not have the gift of seeing angels, I know they are there to lead, guide and protect us all the time. I keep this book by my bed and read it often to feel a sense of calmness, peacefulness and to remind me that I am never alone. Thank you, Lorna, for sharing your extraordinary life experiences with all of us.

I just purchased 2 more books to share with my grandchildren. Their parents are not spiritual. I started reading about the angels in 1996 and began realizing their presence in my life. When I talk to the children about angels, they giggle and look at me like I might be senile or something. I can only imagine what Lorna went through as a child. I have decided to approach the subject of angels in another way ... talking to the children about bullying and not being excepted. When I shared Lorna's experience of being labeled while a young child, the grands' interest peaked.

During, my so far short life, I have been blessed with 2 friends who have the gift of seeing into the spiritual world. Lorna, I truly know how special you are. Thank you with all my heart, Leslie

Toward the Unknown: Memoirs of an American Fighter Pilot, by Col. Chuck W. Maultsby USAF

Col. Chuck Maultsby was born in Greenville, North Carolina on June 7th, 1926. After his mother's death (when he was eight years old), and subsequent rejection by a callous father, he went to live with an aunt and uncle in Norfolk, Virginia. Chuck Maultsby was born to fly and was fixated on aircraft from the time he could walk. He spent much of his youth hanging around the small municipal airport near his Norfolk home doing anything he had to do to be near airplanes and their pilots, while hoping someone would offer him a ride. He worked multiple jobs after school to raise the money necessary to take flying lessons and soloed on his sixteenth birthday. He applied for the Army Air Corps cadet program on his eighteenth birthday; only to suffer the disappointment of seeing the program's suspension at the end of World War II. The Korean War provided the next oportunity to become a jet pilot, and Chuck Maultsby grabbed it, only to be shot out of the sky during his 17th combat mission; and then he endured 22 months as a Chinese prisoner of war all the while suffering "unpleasant" treatment. After the Korean War, he became a pilot-instructor at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada and won a spot on the Nellis Fighter Weapons Team of 1957; the team that swept every event at the "William Tell" competition, beating every other military fighter-pilot team in the U.S. and rest of the free world. From there the Colonel became a member of the USAF Arial Demonstration Team, The THUNDERBIRDS (1958-1960). As a U-2 spyplane pilot, the Colonel found himself in the very dicey predicament of being detected by the Russians over their airspace at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962. It's true to say that he very nearly was the cause of World War III. The next major phase of the Colonel's life was spent in Vietnam in 1967 where he flew 216 combat missions (a full third of those missions were flown in North Vietnam). He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action for his mission in close support of American ground troops in dire straights. After the Vietnam experience, Col. Maultsby continued as a pilot-instructor and squadron commander at Davis-Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona, a staff officer at Tactical Air Command Headquarters at Langley AFB, Virginia, and finally, as the standards and evaluation officer for NATO Forces South in Naples, Italy. Col. Maultsby was married to his wife, Jeanne, from 1949 until his death in 1998. They had three sons. P.S. The Colonel even retells the story of his involvement in one of the most shocking scandals in military history involving the Chief of Staff of the Royal Australian Air Force. The book's foreward was written by the Colonels friend, Martin Caidin, author of over 50 books including "Cyborg" that became Television's "Six Million Dollar Man," and "Marooned" which became a movie starring Gene Hackman, Gregory Peck and Richard Crenna.

    Deserves a Wider Audience
    By Borg9
Aside from a couple of spelling errors here & there this was a cracking read. Heavy on the action & heroism. The part about flying the U2 over the north pole was exciting, as was the Vietnam action. Needs a wider audience.

Though do take a pass on the author's other 'conspiracy' titles. This is probably why TOWARD THE UNKNOWN has not received the attention it truly deserves. There's no tinfoil-hat stuff here, just a solid tale of a man possessing 'the right stuff' in spades, and his exploits.

Joe Celko's Thinking in Sets: Auxiliary, Temporal, and Virtual Tables in SQL (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems), by J

Perfectly intelligent programmers often struggle when forced to work with SQL. Why? Joe Celko believes the problem lies with their procedural programming mindset, which keeps them from taking full advantage of the power of declarative languages. The result is overly complex and inefficient code, not to mention lost productivity.

This book will change the way you think about the problems you solve with SQL programs.. Focusing on three key table-based techniques, Celko reveals their power through detailed examples and clear explanations. As you master these techniques, you’ll find you are able to conceptualize problems as rooted in sets and solvable through declarative programming. Before long, you’ll be coding more quickly, writing more efficient code, and applying the full power of SQL

    • Filled with the insights of one of the world’s leading SQL authorities - noted for his knowledge and his ability to teach what he knows.

    • Focuses on auxiliary tables (for computing functions and other values by joins), temporal tables (for temporal queries, historical data, and audit information), and virtual tables (for improved performance).

    • Presents clear guidance for selecting and correctly applying the right table technique.

Relational database is based on set theory
    By T. Nguyen
Mr. Celko has written many books on SQL and how set theory is the basis for SQL programming. His tone has gotten more ironic as more programmers without the proper training continue to rely on various forms of cursors, loops and temporary tables to manipulate data using SQL. And with the passing of EF Codd, no one quite remember any more that relational database was built on set theory.

Celko is a purist in terms of writing one-pass SQL statement. More programmers should take the same approach. Java & C# programmers think that SQL tables are either streams or files -- holders of data inside their objects. Relational-Object mapping issues are left to Hibernate or DAO. Database tuning is left to DBAs and their tuning wizards. With 2008 server processing power, inefficient sql program are hard to detect and multi-pass SQL statements are now the norm.

It's good to read Celko and get one's mind back to the basics of relational technology. I bought this book for my SQL programming team.

    Hard to read
    By Ben Bartholic
Maybe I am not smart enough to read at Celko's level but the book kept losing me with all of its wordy distractions. I kept thinking to myself, "ok get to the point already". Overall I did like the underlying message of getting out of the row by row processing and moving to a set based approach when manipulation data. I just found the book hard to read.

A Lot of Work, An Ok Payoff
    By Michael Ernest
I picked this up at a bookstore because it was the only mildly intriguing title I saw, and because I don't spend much time thinking about databases. As another reviewer mentions, there is an amusing old-school style, and a humorous example or two of SQL code tortured into doing something "right" and, of course, doing everything in the database. There are numerous typos, too, but not of the type that would put me off.

Maybe I'm not so annoyed by the suboptimal organization of the book and the scattered but useful insights as I should be. But where I found useful things, the payoff was deep. I don't mind Celko's tunnel-vision on the database. He advocates but does not evangelize his position. He knows what his chosen tools can do but betrays no hint, at least to me, of being a Golden Hammer type.

I could also care less whether Joe Celko is a hipster with cool office sneakers who twitters heartfelt one-liners on fresh tech. I know this is hard to fathom, but people over 40 are still alive and do produce useful things. I suspect Joe wears three-piece suits to the office now and always will. He also seems authentic; that goes a long way. I got a good deal of useful information from this book, but it was an uphill read at times.

Expressionist Organic Paths in Architecture: From Finsterlin to Gehry, by Elena Giussani

In history there are numerous twists and turns that join and connect many times in the evolution of the arts. We experience periods of academic classicism, and standardization, as opposed to impromptu moments of individualism and libertarian anarchism. Weaving threads of the heterodox architecture’s path, which abandons the established norms and contrasts the pre-constructed, seems impossible. Doing so often relies on isolated and discordant personalities that are difficult to reconnect with a general poetic. Some exponents of anti-Classical and anti-dogmatic routes, however, can be grouped into a single strand dominated by the conjugation of two poetics: Organicism and Expressionism. Architecture today explores the contemporary Expressionist and Organic instance with a new approach: along with a new freedom of composition and formal experimentation, tries to force the building structures to behave like real organisms that are able to heat up, breathe, live independently.

    “…a welcome addition…recommended…” (CVU, June 04)

    From the Back Cover
Software architecture is critical to the success of software development projects. Unfortunately, many projects are unsuccessful in their attempts to leverage architecture-based development, especially large-scale projects. Lost in a myriad of possible UML diagrams, project teams often resort to ineffective ad-hoc techniques.

The purpose of this book is to enable software architects, their managers, and other development team members to become more effective in directing the course of large-scale software development projects. Written by two experienced architects that have worked in the trenches on many projects, this book provides practical advice for all software teams about developing and capturing critical software architectural concerns.

Leveraging the recent IEEE standard on software architecture and using UML compatible with versions 1.4 and 2.0 this book describes a series of viewpoints for capturing the software architecture and related concerns. These viewpoints convey essential information to users, stakeholders and other members of the development team.

    Large-Scale Software Architecture covers:
    * a series of UML based viewpoints for capturing software architecture and related concerns

    * useful techniques for development of software architectures

    * the roles and responsibilities of the software architect and the architecture team

    * traps and pitfalls of architecture development

    * utilization of reusable and off-the-shelf software frameworks and components
Whether managing, designing, developing or architecting large and complex systems, you will better understand how the software architecture can be captured and represented using this book.

    Practical, thorough and accessible
    By Eoin Woods
    [Review duplicated from Amazon.co.uk]

Jeff Garland and Richard Anthony have written a very practical and accessible explanation of the process of designing and describing the software architecture for a large information system. All of the major architectural structures are covered and the depth of experience of the authors is evident from the solid, practical advice given throughout. There is also a huge amount of practical advice as to how architectural structures can be described using UML, which is particularly valuable.

The only significant criticism I've have is that they don't talk about the quality properties of the architecture all that explicitly. The focus in most of the book is about capturing architectural structures rather than talking about the required architectural qualities that led to the structures being selected. The reader is left to discern this for themselves.

This said though, I'd still recommend the book to any practicing information systems architect.

Excellent guide to designing large software systems
    By Brendan M. OConnor
This book presents a very practical guide to designing and developing large-scale software systems. I've been involved in a number of large-scale projects and this is the first book I've found that includes many of the things you usually find out the hard way. Things like how to effectively communicate the design to the team, how to manage iterations and how to document designs and changes to the design.

Since the topic is large-scale systems, the book focuses more on techniques than on specific examples, but it more than makes up for that by providing practical tips and recommended reading references. If you are leading a software development team or plan to, this book will help you on a very practical level.

Excellent ref. on communicating large-scale software design
    By Brendan Segraves
An excellent reference on what UML diagrams to use to capture the achitecture of a large software project. And this isn't based on the authors' ivory-tower opinions, but on their actual experience of using these diagrams in the real world. We have since used their approach to successfully capture (and thereby communicate to others) the architecture of software projects at our company.
The writing style is a bit dry (there are no humorous anecdotes), but this is more than made up for by being concise.
The book also includes an excellent primer of the various roles a software architect (and other software managers) should take within a large project.

    From Library Journal
Presented here are two books that address the healing qualities of herbs. The New Age Herbalist is an attempt to "form a bridge between orthodox medicine and herbalism . . . ." The authors believe that no herbalists should regard their treatment as beyond scientific explanation and analysis . . . ." The attractive book has many black-and-white drawings and color photos which clearly show the various parts of each herb described. The "glossary" of herbs is designed to be used with chapters on nutrition, healing, and body and home care; it also has a section on growing herbs. The authors provide basic psychological information and practical advice on using herbs, and include recipes for both foods and household preparations. A good, comprehensive work with sound advice on what conditions are treatable herbally, and when to obtain traditional medical treatment. Tierra, author of The Way of Herbs ( LJ 10/1/80), has compiled an impressive work that covers the philosophies of traditional Eastern herbal medicine along with describing the herbs and their uses. He compares these systems to Western herbal traditions, aiming at a synthesis to create a "planetary" herbalism. Tierra's basic assumptions, that because the Eastern systems have existed for centuries, they must work, and that "all plants must have potential therapeutic application," are unproven and probably unprovable. He sees herbalism as a religion of nature, intuitive rather than precise and scientific. The book may be of interest to Eastern herbalism researchers, but not for the practical herbalist, as the information is often contradictory or of marginal use.

Good basic info BUT doesn't show you how to use Western herbs according to Chinese or Ayurvedic principles
    By seagull
This book is definitely not what I expected. The author is renowned and obviously knowledgeable, but what I was hoping from a book subtitled "An Integration of Western Herbs Into the Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic Systems" was just that: a book on Western herbs, used according to Chinese and Ayurvedic principles. As someone trained in Chinese herbology, while I have a great love for the principles and system of Chinese medicine and believe it can be applied to anyone anywhere in the world since it is based on natural laws, I have lately been drawn to using local, or at least American, herbs instead of Chinese. It makes sense to me that the plants available in our own region would be best suited for our healing, just as local and seasonal foods are the healthiest for us. I hoped this book would use Western herbs according to the Chinese system.

Instead, many of the herbs in this book are Chinese and Ayurvedic, mixed in with western herbs. The formulas, too, contain a combination of Asian and Western herbs. To me, this simply confuses the picture. Yes, the meridian and organs that western herbs enter are given. And they are placed in broad categories, though even here I find the same east-west mix, with some of the categories ("Surface-relieving") being Chinese, and others ("Emmenagogues") being western. But as far as, say, categorizing Western herbs according to Chinese or Ayurvedic properties, or taking a Chinese or Ayurvedic pattern of disharmony and offering a formula to address it using western herbs, that does not happen in this book.

Therefore, while good basic information is given for each herb, this book did not serve the purpose I had hoped for.

    Full of information
    By chelseataylore
One thing you can say about this product- it is very full of information in a relatively short book. But, I would recommend it only to those who have at least a basic understanding of both Western and Chinese/East Indian herbalism to get the full effect (which is its intended audience I believe). Though the book does explain most of what it states, this knowledge is necessary to fully appreciate it. It reads like a textbook more than anything, which is great but may not make it a "page turner" for those that don't have this knowledge.

This is an AMAZING handbook, and it explains energies of herbs (I believe over 400 of them!), some history, preparations, organs herbs effect, dosage, parts used, the properties of herbs, and even the methodology behind it all, without going in to too much detail. I especially appreciate the beginning, where he goes into food therapy, the types of preparations and why it matters, the eight methods of therapy, as well as the nature of herbs in Chinese, Western, and Ayurvedic systems and the roots of it all. Excellent! Also, extremely useful appendix/glossary!

    By Valerie B. Lull
This author sets out to bring about the integration of Western herbs into the Ayurvedic system and the Traditional Chinese Medicine system. In the area of Western Herbology he includes European, Native American and Eclectic traditions. He argues that herbalism is as much an art as it is a science and there is an energy and a spiritual side to herbalism. This integrated system he calls Planetary Herbalism.

There is a section on the preparation and procssing of herbs, eight methods of Herbal therapy and Planetary Formulas as well as Ayuerviedic and Traditional Chinese formulas. In Part II of the book he has a Planetary Materia Medica. In Part III, the appendices he has information on herb energetics, herbal supplements for vegetarians and more about Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine. I would not recommemd this book for the beginner or inexperienced. It is a great book for herbal practitioners and laymen who know quite a bit about herbs. -- Val Lull
