This can make it difficult for a new entrant into the field to develop a comprehensive appreciation of the range of tools and approaches which are available to assist decision makers in dealing with the ever-present difficulties of seeking compromise or consensus between conflicting inter ests and goals, i.e. the "multiple criteria". The diversity of philosophies and models makes it equally difficult for potential users of MCDA, i.e. management scientists and/or decision makers facing problems involving conflicting goals, to gain a clear understanding of which methodologies are appropriate to their particular context. Our intention in writing this book has been to provide a compre hensive yet widely accessible overview of the main streams of thought within MCDA. We aim to provide readers with sufficient awareness of the underlying philosophies and theories, understanding of the practi cal details of the methods, and insight into practice to enable them to implement any of the approaches in an informed manner. As the title of the book indicates, our emphasis is on developing an integrated view of MCDA, which we perceive to incorporate both integration of differ ent schools of thought within MCDA, and integration of MCDA with broader management theory, science and practice.

`The book...is an excellent overview of the different multiple criteria approaches developed in divergent schools of thought which emerged in the last three decades. This book is not only a theoretical document, but also provides good coverage of practical issues. It can be recommended to a broad audience, ranging from those in academic institutions to practitioners, as well as those who are interested in finding information on multiple criteria approaches, methods and techniques. It is an excellent book in the main area of Operations Research and Decision Analysis, with a special focus on Multiple Criteria and is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students.' José R. Unusually Disappointing Book

On the positive site, the authors have done a good job researching the literature relative to MCDA and are careful and thorough with their citations. However, my disappointment stems from (1) the production of the book itself is unusually poor (illegible figures, splotchy gray in back of text boxes making it difficult to read, varying typography) - it looks like it was produced on a Xerox machine by a secondary school student, (2) over-reliance on others' work (Keeney is cited so many times that it begs the question, why do we need this work when we can go to Keeney?), (3) over-use of acronyms (makes the book very difficult to read), and (4) infrequent and inconsistent use of examples. The net result of this is a lack of clarity of presentation. My rating would be 1 star but for the diligence of summarizing others' research and work. That said, I recommend going to the source (Keeney) and avoiding this expensive and poorly produced book.

Great book for an interesting field of study

This book is definitely written from the scientific point of view. I've studied the military decision making process a bit and this book gave me not only a better understanding of that particular process but also that other exist and when/where they might be applicable.
If you are interested at all in the study of decision analysis this is a good book. It isn't always an easy read but scientific books rarely are.
I used this while writing my master's thesis and found it very helpful.
It would also be helpful if you were designing software algorithms related with this area of study.

Extremely interesting and useful for MCDA novices and advanced students and practioners alike. Well structured such that issues of non interest to user can be skipped without affecting text flow. Nicely balanced between theoretical under-pinning and practical examples alike.
